Wigan Casino exhibition
What goes around comes around. You can't turn on the TV these days without hearing a northern classic in the background of some advert of downmarket TV drama - northern soul has gone full circle and is hip with the TV executives, ad men and the Nathan Barleys of this world.
In truth it never really went away - it just shifted underground and has operated quite successfully on a much smaller scale over the years. If you want an idea of how it was in its heyday, it might be worth visiting Dancin All Nite - an exhibition covering the Wigan Casino and the Manchester northern soul scene.
This exhibition shows original objects, badges, memorabilia and photographs courtesy of those around at the time. Even the sounds of the allnighters are included in the exhibition - complete with hand clapping - recorded live in the Casino in 1975 and screenings of Granada television's controversial (at the time) 1977 documentary, 'This England' about the Wigan Casino.
Sounds like a good way to spend an afternoon to me.
