Cool Retro TV W/C 21st April

Barry Murphy once more trawls the TV and radio guides to find anything worth tuning into this week. All listings are for UK terrestrial TV, Freeview and national radio, with the shows running from Friday 21st April to Thursday 27th April.

Highlight of the week: The 1970s: That Was the Decade That Was (5/5) FIVE, Friday 21st April, 9.00pm - 10.00pm

The last part of Channel Five's documentary series this week focusing on the style of the decade. Barbara Hulanicki's BIBA label is spot-lighted as well as the work of designers Laura Ashley and Vivien Westwood. The birth of Glam rock is explored, closely followed by Northern soul, punk, ska & reggae as the decade drew to a close, amid rising unemployment.

Parts 1 & 2 shown back-to-back of Martin Scorsese's epic biography of the Zim.

Dylan in the Madhouse - BBC 4. 11.10pm - 00.15am
Documentary about Dylan appearance in the infamous lost '63 BBC TV play The Madhouse on Castle Street.

Monday 24th April


Man in a Suitcase - ITV 4. 6.00pm - 7.00pm
Blind Spot (20/30) A blind girl becomes a victim of circumstance when she is unwittingly present at a murder. A young Felicity Kendal guest stars.

Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) - ITV4. 7.00pm - 8.00pm
The Trouble with Women (23/26) After losing money at a crooked gambling club, Jeff manages to win it back with Marty's help - but then the owner turns up dead and the investigator finds himself arrested for murder. Drama, starring Mike Pratt, Kenneth Cope and Annette Andre Tuesday 25th April


Zoo Gang - ITV 4. 6.00pm -7.00pm
Mindless Murder (2/6) Sir John Mills in cravat & hipsters. Super! The Zoo Gang uncover an extortion racket who are targeting two married movie stars. The extortionists want the Morning Star, a rare diamond that the Martins have care of. The Zoo Gang decide to take out the crooks, but first they have to get their hands on the well-secured diamond themselves.

The Champions - ITV 4. 7.00pm - 8.00pm
The Mission (19/30) Craig and Sharron pose as a gangster and his moll in an attempt to block an escape route for criminals. Richard poses as an alcoholic down and outer.

Wednesday 26th April


Department S - ITV 4. 6.00pm - 7.00pm
A Fish Out of Water (27/28) The body of an Interpol agent is found near the shore shortly after he arrives in Beruit for vacation. Stewart must control his emotions and work around his supervisor's order to not work on the case in order to discover the truth.   

The Saint - ITV 4. 7.00pm - 8.00pm
A Double in Diamonds (95/118) Simon is led into a plot to steal a necklace while investigating the murder of a jeweller.

Thursday 27th April


The Avengers - BBC 4. 7.10pm - 8.00pm
Murdersville (23/24)The sleepy hamlet of Little Storping In-The-Swuff has its calm disrupted by a man coming out of the pub and gunning another man down. The villagers, however, carry on regardless.

The Persuaders - ITV 4. 7.00pm - 8.00pm
A Home of One's Own (15/24) Danny buys a `handy man's special' cottage in England and discovers that his neighbours are into the occult.


Paul Jones - Radio 2. 8.00pm - 9.00pm
Classic r&b and blues.

Shake, Rattle and Roll - Radio 2. 9.00pm - 10.00pm
Mark Lamarr spins more vintage vinyl from his vast collection.
