Billy Liar – the TV series on DVD

BillyliarYou may not know that classic 60s comedy Billy Liar returned in the early 70s as a TV series, written by the Keith Waterhouse/Willis Hall writing team (fresh from their writing success with Budgie) and updated for the era. Successful at the time, it’s never been seen since – until now as Billy Liar – the complete first series finally gets a DVD release.

Still based on the classic novel, but with slim suits replaced by big flares – eternal dreamer, Billy Fisher (Jeff Rawle) stars as Billy, a likeable lad with a habit of becoming lost in his own wild imagination – doing him no favours with his boss at the funeral parlour, Mr Shadrack (Colin Jeavons) or his Dad (George A. Cooper).

A big hit in 1973 when it was first screened, it should be well worth picking up on its release as a 2-disc DVD set on August 18th. We should have a review online before that date.

I never got the feel for brit nouvelle vague 60’s film version. Hopefully the tv series will have better outfits.
