Charlie Buchan's Football Monthly

Charlie_buchan Charlie Buchan was an England international between the wars, then a journalist after the Second World War. The magazine of his name was described as "the magazine of Britain's national game" - and looking back, a unique record of the golden years of British football from the 50s to the 70s.

The best bits are collected in The Best of Charles Buchan's Football Monthly by Simon Inglis. Packed full of hand-tinted images, comic strips, articles, interviews, letters and ads of the day, it's nostalgia from a lost era and with articles like "you can't make a fortune out of football", a true indicator of how far really has moved away from being the people's game.

Available from this month, you can pick it up for around £17.
