Mentioned briefly in this week’s retro TV guide is From Ranch to Raunch, which looks well worth setting the video (or DVD recorder) for when it airs on BBC4 on Wednesday 10th January at 9pm.
It’s a 60-minute documentary looking at how architecture in 1970s California came to reflect the lifestyles of the times. The programme claims to show how modernist experiments and suburban family homes from the 1950s were transformed with the addition of shag pile carpets, hot tubs, and water beds into the party pads of adventurous Californians, liberated by the social changes of the 1960s.
It’s showing as part of BBC4’s California season – worth a look, particuarly if you like the music of that particular state from the 1960s and 70s.
