Soulboy - 1970s northern soul film hits the big screen this summer
There has been talk of a northern soul film for years, but 2010 could see at least two on the big screen. Alongside the 'in production' Northern Soul (indeed, ahead of it to be honest) comes Soulboy, which is heading your way very soon.
So, the plot as told to us thus far: 1974. Power cuts, strikes and boot-boy aggro on the terraces. Flares, Chopper bikes and beer at fourteen pence a pint. Joe McCain, 17 and restless, is bored with the flatline tedium of a life that seems like it's going nowhere. Enter Jane, moving to the beat of a music that Joe's never heard, a vision of loveliness who opens the door to a whole world of sound, movement and all-nighter dancing at The Wigan Casino - the home of Northern Soul! Swept along on this tide of pulsating dance and lust, Joe finally finds somewhere he belongs and the acceptance and true love he yearns for.
You can check out the trailer over the page. It's due to hit various cinemas over the summer, look out for preview screenings in your area before the general release. More at the website.
Update: The two-CD soundtrack is now available to buy. You can see the full tracklisting and more details at the Amazon website.
Further update: A review of the DVD is now online, you can read it here.

I would very much like more information on the two Northern Soul films due out, Its not before time that the Northern scene was portrayed in film, after all, The Casino was the club with the largest membership in the world- and what a Niter it was. Keep The Faith, Bob Monkhouse.

Saw the preview at Isle of Wight scooter rally. Absolutely fantastic film - very uplifting in a "Billy Elliot" type way and very authentic - couldnt fault the details, clothes, music, dancing etc (and I expected to..). Highly recommended - going to see it again as soon as I can!

Personally I think the movie has missed the boat.
It's still not on general release despite the constant drip of publicity and the soundtrack being on the shelves. Most people I know have got bored of it and of hearing about these 'special' screenings.
It should just go straight to DVD now.

I have yet to see the film but the trailers I have seen depict girls with long hair in pony tails... er hum. First rule of a soulie girl "get yer hair cut!" No authentic soulstress would have been seen dead with long hair. Please don't tell me that in the film they had handbags too - that would be too much. The only time I ever saw a woman dance around her handbag at a northern soul event was the time we knew we'd been raided by the CID drug squad!

good film , but thought the home of northern soul was cleethorpes, two venues, the pier, the winter gardens, or did wigan steal that from us like most of the music ?

Gary is wrong. Since when was Cleethorpes every the home of Northern Soul? Manchester or Stoke have much more claim ....
