Whilst my interest in this year’s Games is waning before it has even began, past Olympics still hold some fascination in particular those of 1936, the subject of a play coming to Sadler’s Wells.
The play by Tom McNab looks at the events that led up to the Olympics best remembered for Jesse Owens winning four gold medals and being a key point in Hitler’s rise to power. Hosting the games provided invaluable propaganda for the Nazi movement but presented a moral dilemma for the athletes and other nations involved, aware of Hitler’s treatment of Jewish athletes. The production runs from 18 July to 5 August with tickets costing between £25 and £32.
