Many scenes have had books and TV documentaries about them, but the ’80s indie scene seems to have missed out. Something that A Scene In Between: Fashion and Independent Music in the UK 1983-89 by Sam Knee wants to put right.
Published by Cicada and covering 192 pages, it covers the mid-to-late ’80s indie scene – after post punk but before Madchester and Brit pop. Bands like the Television Personalities, Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, Talulah Gosh, Loop, The Pastels, Vaselines, The Shop Assistants, Boy Hairdressers and The Flatmates to name just some.
It features unpublished photographs of the people, clubs and bands of the time, along with the fashions and the influences of the bands, including the original mod scene and ’60s psychedelia. Not out for a while yet, but you can pre-order a copy ahead of the September launch for £14.95.
