Cavallini London desk calendar

London calendar front

It seems a little early to be thinking about 2011 but I guess busy people may already looking for a calendar to plan the coming year. For those people, the Cavallini London desk calendar is a calendar with a distinctive retro look.

The calendar features nostalgic views of the capital, taken from the Cavallini archives. The images look like they date from the 1940s, '50s and early '60s and include views taken from old guidebooks and postcards, the ubiquitous 'Keep Calm and Carry On', as well as an image of the Queen looking several decades younger. For a peek at the contents, click over the page where the back of the calendar is illustrated.

The calendar costs £10.95.

Prices vary, but to give you an idea, the cabinet illustrated is for sell for £1900.

House Industries plywood prints

Banjo print

More stylish artwork courtesy of House Industries, in this case with their plywood prints

Their prints are all based around fonts devised for the advertising industry between the 1930s and the 90s. One print actually reproduces the index to these fonts but the Banjo print pictured reproduces the alphabet and has a strong late 60s/70s look with the plywood material adding to the retro feel. Each print is pre-drilled to help with hanging them on your wall.

The prints cost $100 each.

Keep Your Teeth Clean 1930s print

Keep your teeth clean

It's a message that never loses its importance and must have been said in hundreds of different ways over the years, not least in this unusual 1930s Keep Your Teeth Clean print

The striking design looks quite contemporary but in fact was designed in 1938 in America to promote good oral hygiene. The poster has been selected from the images in the massive archive of the Library of Congress and reproduced by a company called Wallblank. Take a look at their selection of 'vintage' prints for more images in this line, alongside more familiar wartime designs and the See America range of posters.

The print costs between $14 and $24 depending on the size required.

Fiona Hewitt’s Pop Dumpling Dynasty print

Dumpling

Fiona Hewitt is the illustrator behind the Dumpling Dynasty whose kitsch kits are for sale throughout the UK (we featured their shoe shine kit early last year). The Boxbird store also has a selection of her prints online, including the Pop print shown above.

The giclee print, a fake advert for a sickly looking pink drink, features an overly cute boy and his loyal donkey and shows her usual beguiling mix of influences: everything from Chinese communist propaganda alongside advertising and packaging from the 40s and 50s. If you decide this look works for you, this particular print costs £200.
