Is it a gadget or a piece of interior design? The Tabblue is actually both, a dual-purpose audio system and side table from Steepletone. Or a midcentury speaker table if you prefer.

Steepletone is one of those brands that seems to have been around for ages, In fact, the company has been around since 1972, making record players and other related gadgets over that period of time, as well as other gadgets, such as phones and radios.

Many of its products have as vintage look about them and for me, some work and some don’t. I’m not a huge fan of those ‘boxy’ record players that look like something from the 1930s. But I do like this.

As you can see, this isn’t a record player. This is a piece of modern design inspired by the midcentury modern era. Its name also hints at what it is.

The Tabblue is a table with Bluetooth connectivity. To be honest, if this was just a table it would probably have caught my eye with its slim profile and tapered wooden legs. But that’s not the whole story.

Inside this table is that Bluetooth connectivity, 2x USB charging ports and an AUX in port, along with 4 x 12W RMS speakers and 2 x 20w Tweeters to give what is described as a ‘crisp, clear and rich sound’. All packed into that rather lovely fabric unit too, which produces 360-degree sound.

Play your own music, playlist and internet radio from the Tabblue by connecting your device via Bluetooth for wireless play. Or wire the device via the AUX, its’ up to you. The USB slots will be handy for charging too.

Finally, the Tabblue is fitted with a Lithium rechargeable battery that can give you up 7 hours of cordless play. Or just keep it near a socket.

Dark and light wood options are available and the price, should you want one, is £153. Not much more than a standard MCM side table really.
