Oiva Toikka Owls

4957There’s a whole world of Scandinavian ornaments out there waiting to be discovered, but it can be daunting if you don’t know where to begin and prices for originals can be pretty steep. A good place to start a collection could be with Oiva Toikka’s Owls.

One of the leading names in Finnish glass, he has been creating his The Birds collection since the 1970s and continues to this day. Each one is handmade so every bird is unique.

Mulberry Hall sells a wide selection of his Birds, including the charming Owls. The Little Barn Owl pictured here is the cheapest at £60 with prices going to over £150 for the Barn Owl.

Crayonne Ice Bucket

7731_1Pineapple Ice Buckets are the epitome of kitsch barware, but if you want something more sophisticated then may I suggest the Crayonne Ice Bucket.

Sold by Habitat in the 1960s and 1970s, the Crayonne is a simplistic yet sleek design and was produced in a range of colours and sizes. Pineapple Ice Bucket Retro has several for sale on their Ebay shop in a choice of chocolate brown, rust red, eggy yellow, orange, grass green or cream, all priced £20.

As is so often the way, they look great in a group as pictured so perhaps you could always take the seller’s advice and buy a few to use as storage jars.

TV Dinner Table

SendthumbnailIf you can’t prise yourself away from this week’s selection of retro television programmes, you’ll need one of these TV Dinner Tables.

The plastic tray has indentations for your food, drink and crockery and is available in pink, blue or the more authentically 1970s orange.

They are currently half price from the DotCom Giftshop, reduced to just £10 – cheap enough for you to pay one for each member of your household so you can still dine together.

Vintage cloth peg bag

Vintage_pegbag
We’re very much in favour of recycling – and if something stylish comes out of it too, all the better. And that’s the case with this vintage cloth peg bag from eco-retailer Biome Lifestyle.

The bag uses reclaimed vintage fabric (there’s a choice on the site, including this pink posies cloth), along with a old-style wire hanger for support and should look great hanging on your clothes line.

It’s cheap too – retailing online for £9.50.

Eileen Gray Sofa Monte Carlo

Eileen_gray_monte_400Eileen Gray is most famous for her Bibendum Chair which we’ve featured previously, but here is another striking design, the Sofa Monte Carlo.

Gray was one of the few wo men designers involved in the Modernist movement and this sofa is a good indication of how she caused a sensation with her designs back in the 1920s. The sofa has distinctive curve and an unusual backrest that gives it an idiosyncratic look. It still looks stylish today, although perhaps not the most comfortable sofa we’ve ever seen.

Livingroom 24 are selling the Monte Carlo for 2887 Euros (approximately £2,000) which includes free shipping within the EU and a free gift of an Eileen Gray occasional table.

Wrongwoods Chest of Drawers

30558_1The Wrongwoods Chest of Drawers is a new design, bringing together the signature printed laminates of Richard Woods with the utilitarian furniture of Sebastian Wrong. The distinctive cartoon-like print in yellow/red (pictured) or white/green combinations give the piece a decidedly pop art vibe.

It is pretty expensive at £2,175 from Icone but would be all you’d need to add character to an otherwise plain room. The cheaper option of a night table is also available for £929.
