Space Invaders flashing LED door mat

Invaders_doormat_animated

Door mats as technology? Yes, that’s the case with this Space Invaders flashing LED door mat.

It works on three levels – firstly, it keep the dirt off your lovely new carpets, secondly, it impresses your gadget-loving friends and thirdly, those glowing/flashing invaders might deter any unwanted visitors from crossing your threshold. But probably not.

The flashing image works on a motion sensor, so you’ll not be annoyed by it all day and it is powered by 4x AAA batteries. Available from ThinkGeek, you can pick one up for $69.99 (around £35).

Anne Kyrro Quinn Target Cushions

TargetMod targets are everywhere theses days (see the shoelaces we featured the other day for proof) so the design has probably lost some of its credibility. But designer Anna Kyyro Quinn has injected some new life into the motif with her Target Cushions.

The rings on her design are more elliptical than the uniform circles of the traditional target symbol and she has shunned the red/blue/white combination in favour of more unusual colour combinations such as the oatmeal/grey/red picture or pink/olive/pink. They are available in oblong or square in a variety of size, all made from luxury natural fabrics and cut, sew and finished by hand.

The only downside is that it comes at a cost with prices ranging from £115 to £150 on the Urban Suite website.

Twiggy Sideboards

Item_35154Sideboards fell out of favour in the eighties when minimalism ruled design, but before then the sideboard was a feature of most homes, either in the lounge, dining room or hallway. Now the sideboard seems to be making something of a comeback, probably because people are realising it is an incredibly useful piece of furniture.

Purves & Purves have a whole range of sideboards by the Swedish designer, Rutger Anderson, the Twiggy Sideboards. Not only do these sideboards embody retro Scandinavian style, they are named after a 1960’s icon! Twiggy Sideboards are available in ivory or anthracite, and with a range of drawer and size options.

The one pictured here is the most expensive in the set, costing £435.

George Nelson Zoo Timers

561 In sharp contract to the Eye Clock and other George Nelson clocks we’ve featured previously, the renowned designer also produced a range of clocks for children, the Zoo Timers.

Although also manufactured by Vitra, they could not be more different from his other clocks. These designs showcase Nelson’s talent as a graphic designer and reflect the more playful design trends of the 1960s. There are four in the series, each one a brightly coloured cartoon animal. Pictured here is Talulah the Toucan, but you can also choose from Omar the Owl, Fernando the Fish or Elihu the Elephant.

They are available from Nest priced around £75 each.

George Nelson Eye Clock

Vitra_eyeWe’ve not featured a George Nelson clock for a few weeks now, so here is another one for you to look at – the Eye Clock.

Its hard to believe that this clock was designed fifty years ago, but it dates back to 1957. It has recently been reissued by Vitra and is one of Nelson’s more unusual designs. The use of the eye shape rather than more tradition round clock faces reminds me of the products designed by the Surrealists.

Several online shops are selling the Eye Clock, including Utility Design, and it is usually prices at just under £200.
