The Chap magazine

Thechap

I've just realised, we've been writing about all things vintage, retro and/or classic for over four years now and we have somehow managed to forget The Chap magazine.

The Chap is pretty much as you expect – 'a wry look at the modern world through the steamed-up monocle of a more refined age'. In the most recent 'love' issue (still available to order), that has included a feature on how the ladies should go about finding themselves 'a Chap husband'. as well as sartorial tips, how a gentleman should purchase vintage-style lingerie, Rich Fulcher on hats, safari suits and wooing the ladies, how to be a vintage socialite and a vintage-style wedding special. If love isn't your thing, there's also pieces on pipes, absinthe and teddy boys too.

£3.25 gets you a copy from specialist retailers (Waterstones used to be one such place) or get a copy or subscription via the website.

Harlequin Contour 1970s-style wallpaper at John Lewis

Harlequin

Probably not suitable for a fuill room makeover, but for a feature wall with a retro twist, the Harlequin Contour wallpaper could be for you.

It's described as '50s style', but those big, bold patterns and colours are much more of a 70s thing for us. If the colours are a little too dark, don't despair, the paper is available in lighter shades of sky and teal too.

Each roll is W52cm x L10m, easy to match up and made to order, selling for £39.

Le Klint 1970s Joker pendant light back with colourful finishes

Joker

An old friend is back with a bright new finish – the Le Klint Joker pendant light.

First designed back in 1970 by Christian Raeder, the bat-like light (although it's more commonly referred to as a 'flower') was award-winning in its day, but was only originally available in the monochrome shades of black and white. Now colour has been added to the mix – blue, orange, alu, petrol blue, red, yellow and green to be precise.

All of which retail for £164.

Stripe Playsuit from Topshop

Playsuitstripe

As playsuits pervade the high street, it can be tricky to find those with faithful retro reproduction credentials. This Stripe Playsuit from Topshop has just enough vintage inspiration to provide a wearable option, while still ticking all the right boxes for fifties fashion lovers.

The nautical influence is instantly evident thanks to wide stripes and gold button detailing. The loose jersey fabric allows for a casual fit, while a scoop neck and dropped waist add a much-needed femininity to the style.

It's now available from Topshop for £40.
