Make a City London postcard set

Make a City London

Yesterday we showed you tiles based on postcards from the '50s and '60s but for an alternate tourist take with a distinctly retro feel, try this Make A City London postcard set

The set features five designs to cut-out and stick together that are based around a very nostalgic view of the city including rock and roll and fish and chips and, of course, the Routemaster bus. The designs are executed in bright colours and have a very Pop feel. In fact, given the subject matter of the postcards they'd have probably been as applicable in 'Swinging London' as they are now.

At only £3 for a set, they're as cheap as the chips they illustrate.

Jielde Signal retro-styled floor lamp

Signal

The French company Jielde has been making lighting since 1950 – and the Jielde Signal floor lamp looks like it could well have come from the original range.

This vintage-style design is constructed in steel, coloured in a wide range of colours (many considerably brighter than the black above), using articulated armed to offer the right light for your task and a 40w bulb to deliver it.

Not the easiest thing to find in the UK, but you can pick it up at the Aram Store and online at the Conran Shop, price around the £270 mark.

eBay watch: Dieter Rams-designed 1960s Braun RT20 radio

BraunRT20
A perfect example of a design classic – and right now, the price of this Dieter Rams-designed 1960s Braun RT20 radio hasn’t gone above a penny.

That’s probably because the radio is a fairly new listing (there’s also a ‘Buy It Now of £500), but if you keep your eye on it, you could bag a bargain. According to the write-up, the 1961 Rams design is in very good condition, offering LW and MW reception, plus controls for volume, treble and bass.

Even if you never play it, the radio would look great on a midcentury sideboard and it can only go up in value. Especially if you get it for that penny plus postage from Germany.

Cherry Cocktail Dress by Big Beautiful Barbara Brown

Cherry

The 1940s endures most in the annals of fashion thanks to the tea dress, a style that never seems to lose favour with fashion designers across the years. This version from Big Beautiful Barbara Brown stays true to the retro aesthetic with some forties and fifties design points.

Available in four fabric choices, each centres around the inclusion of cute and kitsch cherry print. From the plain black with appliqué cherries, to the all over print, the dresses are each pitch perfect in their structure. The sweetheart bustline combines with a portrait collar to give an unmistakeable and timeless vintage look.

Aertex Gold range – tops inspired by World Cup shirts of the 60s and 70s

Aer1

Heritage brand Aertex has gone back to its past for the new Aertex Gold range, which is inspired by World Cups of the 60s and early 70s.

Indeed, Aertex was worn by the England squad in 1970s, so the company can legitimately claim a connection. These aren't replica pieces though. Instead, it's a range of 11 designs inspired by shirts worn in the 40 or so years back, made in a modern breathable 'Aertex Fabric', with styles ranging from crew necks to polo shirts in various colours.

Expect to pay between £25 and £30, with the shirts hitting stores (and Aertex Online) in April. More images over the page.
