Cool Yule: Phil Spector – A Christmas Gift For You

Spector
Something a bit more mainstream today, but we make no apologies for selecting Phil Spector’s A Christmas Gift For You as today’s Cool Yule candidate,

Very different from James Brown’s Funky Christmas because this album does offer up the Christmas standards – including White Christmas, Frosty The Snowman, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and Silent Night – but it works because they all get the Wall Of Sound treatment – and 43 years later, it still sounds as fresh as ever.

And now is the best time to buy it, as it’s been reissued as a double CD, coupled with a Best Of Phil Spector album. And every home should have one of those.

Antoni & Alison – String Piece bag

Bagstringfront
Most girls either love shoes or handbags, and I must say I prefer handbags, and I really love the ones by Antoni & Alison.

All their handbags combine a traditional shapes, but come decorated with quirky designs or messages. They are kooky but great.

This one called String Piece is also quite practical as it is cream, so it would go with most things.

It is made of vinyl and cotton with a pvc coating to protect the outside, inside it has suedette lining.

The size is H19cm x W26cm x D8cm, and costs £80.

Buy it online at the Antoni & Alison shop.

Lucienne Day vintage tea towels

Lucienne_towels

We featured Robin Day yesterday, so it seems only right to feature his wife, Lucienne Day today – especially as some of her tea towel designs from the 1950s have been reissued.

Probably Britain’s most famous textile designer of the 20th Century, Lucienne Day’s work can be found in museum collections worldwide. But it’s not expensive to get some into your home. These tea towel designs, launched originally in 1954, are fantastic period pieces, great pieces of design and practical items too.

They’re made in Ireland from 100% Irish pure linen in 4 designs –  ‘Too many cooks’, ‘Provencal’, ‘Night & Day’ and ‘Batterie de Cuisine’. All come in smart gift boxes and retail for £16.

Pete Fowler – Magic Mountain print

Petefowler
We like to feature art work to buy, and whilst browsing the Pictures on Walls site the other day I came across this Magic Mountain print by Pete Fowler.

Pete is best known for his illustrations on the Super Furry Animals covers, so if you like the quirky art work on those why not buy yourself one of his limited edition prints.

This Magic Mountain print looks like the poster for an imaginary festival inhabited by a range of strange characters, it is quirky but cool. It kind of reminds me of an updated psychedelic poster from the 60s.

Magic Mountain is from an edition of 100 prints and is signed and numbered by the artist. It is 500mm x 700mm, and costs £75.

A great idea for Christmas gift for someone who likes to have something a bit different on their wall.

Cool Yule: James Brown’s Funky Christmas

Jb_christmas Bored of Band Aid? Sick of Slade? Looking for something a bit more hip to soundtrack Christmas? You’ve come to the right place. This week we’ll be digging out some alternative Christmas sounds that should mean a Cool Yule at your house – starting with the hardest working man in showbusiness.

James Brown’s Funky Christmas is just that. It’s actually a compilation of his Christmas work, including tracks from his 1966 LP, Christmas Song and his ’72 recording, Hey America, It’s Christmas. There’s a mix of self-penned tunes, covers of early 60s R&B Christmas tunes and some full-on festive funk – typified by Soulful Christmas – classic JB, but with a seasonal message (and available last year as a limited vinyl 45).

Don’t expect too many Christmas standards (I think there’s just one), but do expect some top notch funk and soul that should make your Christmas gathering go with a swing. And all for under £5.
