Robin Day Tricorne tray

Robinday_tricorne
We love classic design – and if it’s got an affordable price tag, all the better. Well, you get both with the Robin Day Tricorne tray.

Robin Day is arguably Britain’s most renowned furniture designer, bringing out designs over a 60-year that still are still being produced today – and still fitting effortlessly into our lives. The Tricorne tray was originally designed in 1955 – with a design that shows off Day’s use of form and technology to create a functional item that’s unlikely to go out of style.

Available in birch and walnut, it’s available for £65 and £75 respectively.

Elipson updates 70s Planet speakers

Elipson_planet
One for all you space age design freaks. If you’re in the market for some futuristic 70s speakers, you’ll be pleased to know that Elipson has re-introduced its Planet speakers.

However, rather than go for the full-on reproduction, Elipson has teamed up with wire-free specialists Parrot to add Bluetooth – which means you can use them around the house without any ugly wires, streaming music from a suitable Bluetooth device – PC, MP3 player or even a mobile phone.

Each Planet speaker is equipped with its own amplifier and both speakers offer a two way 60W bass reflex sound image per channel and a frequency range of 40-20,000Hz. They’re bundled with PC software for tuning and are available in either glossy white or black. Price is between 1000 Euros to 1200 Euros per pair.

I don’t think we’ve featured any BMX-related products for a while, so to redress that balance, how about this BMX tote bag.

This Natural tote is made of 100% cotton and lined, measures 13 inches x 15 inches and features a big and bold silk screened BMX image, along with logo of designer Noonworks. Note that the straps are actually black (not red as in the picture).

Available now, you can pick it up for $25 (which is around £14).

Vintage travel art on canvas

Vintage_travel

We’ve flagged up vintage travel poster auctions in the past – they’re affordable art, but still not that cheap – prices are hundreds. So how about this vintage travel art on canvas?

They’re reproductions rather than originals – prints on stretched canvas, finished off and slightly accentuated by an artist and ready to hang. Three are available – Air France, Holland – America Line and the Zeppelin.

Each is priced at £36.95.

Joe Colombo: Inventing the Future in Manchester

Jo_colombo
Back in April, we previewed the Joe Colombo exhibition and mentioned that it was heading to Manchester. Well, 8 months down the line, it’s arrived – and well worth the wait.

Joe Colombo: Inventing the Future is the first international retrospective of Colombo’s influential work, mixing what are now design classics (including the Elda armchair, the Universale chair, the lamp Alogena and of course, the Boby Trolley) with some of the Italian’s more quirky and outlandish ideas, plus original sketches, plans, brochures, architectural models, several films and contemporary photos.

If you’re in the city, it should offer some inspirational respite from the Christmas shopping crowds. Joe Colombo: Inventing the Future runs from Saturday 2nd December 2006 – Sunday 25th February 2007 at the Manchester Art Gallery. Admission is free.
