Rubik’s Cube Mug and Rubik’s Cube Coasters

Rub1

From being the must-have puzzler game of the 1980s, the Rubik's Cube more of an iconic design, lending its shape and colours to all manner of modern-day items. The Rubik's Cube Mug and Rubik's Cube Coasters are the most recent.

Both are on pre-order now, with the mug following the 'Cube' shape as closely as possible, but throwing in a 'special curved lip' so it's actually easy to drink out of. The coasters also ape the cube, stacking on top of each other to create a cube when not in use.

If you want one of either, the mug is £8.99, while the coasters are £12.99. See a shot of the coaster over the page.

For sale: 1950s Erno Goldfinger-designed Wellesley House property in Broadstairs, Kent

Erno1

We usually feature huge art deco, midcentury or modernist architectural masterpieces on these pages, great to look at, but pretty much always unaffordable to all of us. Well, here is a semi-detached house that's firmly in the 'affordable' bracket for more of us – but it's also an Erno Goldfinger-designed Wellesley House property in Broadstairs, Kent.

In truth, the designer and the history of the house are actually more interesting than the property, but just think…you can tell the world your home was designed by a modernist legend. How cool would that be?

eBay watch: Midcentury split-level side table

Table

We're all for affordable midcentury design, which this split-level side table is right now.

The picture says it all really, a late 50s / early 60s table that's laid out over two levels, offering a bit of midcentury cool to your living room.

Sadly, no details of materials or designer, but there is a condition report, which says it has 'slight wear' (a couple of faded round water stains, a small tear in the plate framing), but overall, sounds fine. Just £9 right now. Oh yes, it does come apart for shipping.

Jazz bed linen from Linea at House of Fraser

Jazz linea
If you called your design 'Jazz', you're expecting something eye-catching and that's the case with this Jazz bed linen by Linea, available at House of Fraser.

It's certainly colourful, with its use of pink, and the lines of its pattern could well be explained by a Jazz Age influence. However, it's also reminiscent of the 1960s Lucienne Day bed linen we featured earlier in the month and the Op-Art style lines of this design could suggest a sixties influence too. Whatever era you attribute its influence to, it's an undeniably eye-catching pattern.

Prices start at £10 for a pillowcase and £35 for a single duvet cover.

eBay watch: 1960s G-Plan Astro coffee table

Astro

When it comes to affordable midcentury design, you can't go far wrong with the better end of the G-Plan range. If you dig around, you can find a number of interesting (and always well made) pieces, both at eBay and in secondhand places. This G-Plan Astro coffee table is one of the more common, but also one of the better value designs.

It's a coffee table, first seen in the 1960s and made of teak, that curved wood frame offering some midcentury-style cool, the whole thing finished off by a central piece of glass. It looked good then and it arguably still looks good now.

This one looks in excellent condition, having 'recently been waxed and oiled', with no mention of any kind of damage anywhere. It's no a 'buy it now' for £95. If you miss out or think that's a bit costly, keep looking, they do come up regularly.
