eBay watch: 1950s wood and formica plant stand

Plant

If you happen to be furnishing your home in a 1950s style, this wood and formica plant stand could be the perfect addition.

The main kidney shaped table is made of wood and finished with a charcoal grey Formica top plus a white grid pattern finish and a gold and black metallic rim. But that's not all – there's also four removable (and angled) wooden feet, two curved wood stems and five wooden platforms with Formica covers. It's an eye-catching thing, that's for sure.

The stand is described as being in 'very good/good' condition, with 'age related scratches, marks and staining' and a loose shelf, that can probably fixed easily. Right now, it's priced at £29.

Lucy Turner at The Old Cinema

Lucy
The Old Cinema is now stocking the work of Lucy Turner, a talented designer who reworks vintage furniture to give it a contemporary feel.

Specifically Lucy creates her own designs using Formica which she applies to mid-century furniture to give a new twist on the retro look. Apologies though if you had your design on the sideboard pictured – that's already sold but there's plenty of other pieces available including tables and wardrobes, as well as sideboards.

Current pieces in stock range from £260 to £650 in price.

Ella Doran Opal Formica Table

Furniture-Opal-Table-large
The Opal Formica Table is the first product from Ella Doran to feature her Opal pattern.

Like the Geometric Repeat pattern that was introduced last year, the Opal is a op-art design that is more subtle than Ella Doran’s more famous work. Here it is used on a table top made from Formica (always good for creating a retro look), on a James Leonard school desk-style table.

The table is available to buy from the Ella Doran website, priced £350.

The Leigh Coffee Table by & Then was inspired by the Shaker style of the late 18th Century and named after one of the movement’s founders (although spelling it differently). T

hat period might be somewhat earlier than our usual sphere of interest, but the coffee table uses laminated Formica, which gives it a midcentury feel. The table is made to order, so will take up to ten weeks to make and comes with a £1840 price tag that reflects this.

The Leigh Coffee Table is available to order from Brighton Pod.

eBay watch: 1950s Formica-topped plant stand

Plant

A rather cool little item for the 50s-themed home, this Formica-topped plant stand.

No maker of note, but if you want the look, it's all here – three angled wooden legs, a wooden platform and a black and white-striped Formica top with silver metallic rim.

Condition is described as 'good/fair', with some age-related marking. Then again, not much to pay – right now, it's just 99 pence.

Formverket kitchenware

Formverket_annadoris_cboard1_380

Using Formica as a material is a simple short cut to a retro look in either a café or the home. Like Alison Milner's table, Formverket's kitchenware range is inspired by 1950s and 60s Formica table tops.

The collection is the work of Barbro Tryberg Boberg and includes trays, cutting boards and trivets, all covered with retro-inspired patterns. For example, the Anna/Doris board pictured is a two-sided cutting board with each side featuring a different distinctive pattern. It's made from HDF with a Formica laminate which means it's pretty durable as well as good-looking.

This cutting board costs $40 while trays and trivets are available for $28.
