Urban Outfitters Pod Table

Podtables

When a product name includes the word “pod”, you just know it is going to be space-age style, and the Pod Table from Urban Outfitters is no different. This practical side table adds a touch of retro-futuristic style to your lounge.

Made from moulded high-gloss plastic, the pod table is available in a choice of white, black, lime or orange, although there is the orange and white have proved so popular that they won’t be available again until August.

They cost $110 (approximately £56) from the Urban Outfitters website.

Kubrick Coffee Table

Kubricktable

The Kubrick Coffee Table is obviously named after the director, presumably with his classic film 2001: A Space Odyssey in mind.

It is totally white, made entirely from acrylic capped ABS, which gives it that simplistic, but space-age look. However, beyond this simplicity it does have a dual purpose as it can be used as a magazine rack too, due to the deep grooves in the table top.

It costs £279 from Home Temptations.

Walmart Stockholm Desk

Walmartdesk

Something here for our American readers and from a surprising source. The Stockholm Desk is from Walmart, certainly not somewhere I’d normally associate with retro design.

It is said to be inspired by Swedish design, but it also has a definite mid-century look to it. It is made from light coloured veneer (sadly not from real wood) with white and orange accents.

It has now been reduced from $186 to $149.97 (approximately £76). Matching storage trolley and cabinet are available to complete the look. Visit the Walmart website for further details.

La Belle Epoque: EMI’s French Girls 1965-68

LabellaepoqueWhilst the V&A celebrates the sounds and styles of the Supremes this summer, this compilation pays tribute to the French sound from a similar period. "La Belle Epoque: EMI’s French Girls 1965-68" brings together 20 songs released on EMI’s various French labels in the 1960s.

It goes beyond the usual suspects of Serge Gainsbourg’s women and Françoise Hardy, to include more obscure acts, but ones that nonetheless still have the unmistakable French sound – although Gainsbourg does pop up with Michele Arnaud’s “Les Papillons Noirs”. It also features Sandie Shaw, who obviously isn’t French but did release some songs in other languages.

It is available to buy from Amazon for under £5, so a cheap way to bring a little French sophistication to your stereo this summer.

1950s & 1960s Vintage Educational Posters

Posteredufunfair

Rennies Seaside Modern has a good stock of original educational posters from the 1950s and 1960s.

The term “educational” probably doesn’t sound the most inspiring, but these posters are lovely reminders of days gone by. They seem particularly appropriate to feature now as many of them depict summery scenes, such as the seaside and fairground.

Prices range from £50 for unframed posters up to £200 for some framed.  To see the current selection, visit the Rennies website.
