Pierre Paulin Mushroom Chair

Mushroom_2Another classic chair from French designer Pierre Paulin, who designed the famous Ribbon Chair we featured earlier in the week. The Mushroom Chair was Paulin’s first design using the new construction technique of a metal frame covered with foam, which was revolutionary back in the sixties.

The great designer himself said "A chair should be more than simply functional. It should be friendly, fun and colourful."  And the Mushroom is certainly that.

This chair is on show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, but a reproduction is available from BlueSunTree for £450. If it is good enough for MoMa, it is good enough for your lounge!

Yellow Geometric Print Rug

5527400120124_med_2Rugs – they lie on the floor, you walk all over them, they get dirty, and they can be pretty expensive.

If you don’t want to spend a fortune but still want something eye-catching, then Urban Outfitters are currently selling this Yellow Geometric Print Rug. The pattern and the bold colour make it attention-grabbing, but it’s the price that really caught our attention – it is just £25.

Lec Retro Range refrigerators

Lec_retro
Another alternative to the the ubiquitous Smeg fridge, this time from Lec, which has just launched a Retro Range of refrigerators and fridge freezers.

In terms of looks, there’s very little to choose between the models, all featuring that vintage-style look and retro handle, silver or ivory colour schemes and a wine rack, glass shelves and salad drawer. The main difference is if you want a fridge with freezer box or you want a split fridge/freezer.

Prices for the fridge with box start at £769 (which makes it considerably cheaper than a Smeg fridge), with other models slightly more expensive. See the website for a full breakdown.

Ribbon Chair by Pierre Paulin

1775Pierre Paulin’s Ribbon Chair is a truly iconic piece of furniture. First created by the French designer in 1966, it won the Chicago Design Award in 1968 and was featured in the 1975 film “Space 1999”.

With its sculptured form, the ribbon chair could almost be a work of art, but this isn’t at the expensive of comfort or durability, as these chairs were designed to last a lifetime. A good thing too as they will set you back in the region of £2600.

Atomic Interiors of Nottingham stocks Ribbon Chairs by original manufacturer, Artifort – price on application.

Candy Queen Seaside Light Switches

Dsr4_2The humble light switch – essential, but dull. Not necessarily so according to Candy Queen Designs, who produce a selection of decorative dimmer switches.

Their range of Seaside Light Switches are especially cute, featuring photographs of traditional seaside resorts, that will transport you back to childhood holidays or remind you of Quadrophenia! Images include Helter Skelters, Merry-Go-Rounds and pebble beaches. The rotary knob has been replaced by a real piece of seaside rock, set in resin, which you turn to control the lighting.

The light switches cost approximately £25 each and come with full installation instructions. Visit the Candy Queen Designs website to see the full range.

Gastone Trolley by Kartel

Gastone_folding The Gastone Trolley, designed by Antonio Citterio for Kartel isn’t strictly speaking from the past as it was first designed in 1991, but serving trolleys always conjure up images of the 1970s, in particular Abigail’s Party.

It is available in a range of colours, including a rather retro shade of plum. It is smaller than the trolleys of the Seventies and easily folds away for storage. So why not put on your best clothes and invite the neighbours round for pineapple and cheese on sticks and a bottle or two of Blue Nun?

It is available from DesignME priced £367.
