Mae Dress by French Connection

Mae

Often when an item of clothing combines influences from more than one retro aesthetic, it can end up with none of the styles looking quite right. But when this is done well it can provide a rare gem for the retro wardrobe, as in the case of this Mae Dress from French Connection.

The dress combines elements of 1980s fashion with an air of 1920s design, creating something which works surprisingly well. The luxurious bird pattern and embroidery gives the luxe glamour of the twenties and thirties, while the shape of the dress gives the impression of an 80s take on art deco era. The overall result, rather than seeming disconnected and too busy, is in fact almost timeless.

Get it from French Connection now for £200.

George Nelson 1940s Bubble wall lamp range

Nelson_wall

We've seen the pendant reissues of these a while back, but not the George Nelson Bubble lamp range are now available as wall lamps.

Very stylish too. First seen in 1947, they were produced by Howard Miller in several variations from the early 50s through to 1979, with these reissues made to the original specifications and using the original Howard Miller tooling. That includes a walnut wall mount, an extendable brushed nickel arm, adjustable plug-in cord and counterweight.

Choose from the Ball, Cigar and Saucer designs, with prices at £415. See one of the other designs over the page.

Pin Up Wrapping Paper

Pinupwrap

Hopefully we provide our readers with plenty of ideas for retro gifts, but what about gift wrap? Crumpet and Skirt (a contender for the best company name this month) has produced this great Pin Up Wrapping Paper.

It is available in a choice of white or green, both of which feature images of saucy retro ladies, tastefully attired in vintage undies and other coquettish poses.

The paper costs £2.50 per sheet. A full list of stockists can be found on the Crumpet and Skirt website, including Lilis Boutique who have the paper to buy online.

The Avengers early episodes get new DVD reissue

Avengers

Sadly, not everything has survived, but the remaining episodes of the first series of The Avengers, along with the second series, are about to get a DVD reissue, courtesy of Optimum.

Just two and a half first series episodes survive, but thankfully all of series 2 is still around, all fully restored (for the first time) and of course with Patrick Macnee playing Steed, Honor Blackman doing the partner thing as Catherine/Cathy Gale. The entire eight-disc set has a running time of 1,520 minutes, augmented by extras including a 132-page book covering series one, a series one scrapbook, scripts, materials, stills, promotional brochures, audio commentaries and an Honor Blackman interview – most of that new for this release.

Look out for this from 5th October 2009, priced 'officially' at £79.99, but certain to be discounted in the Christmas run-up (it's already around £57 on Amazon for pre-order).

Make-do-and-Mend with John Lewis

Make-do-and-mendJLcombo

Surprisingly for a department store, John Lewis are encouraging their customers to be frugal this autumn. They're tapping into the Make-do-and-Mend trend this autumn and with a small booklet and practical classes at selected stores.

Their booklet is a collection of top thrift tips collected from their employees, rather than the reprint from the Imperial War Museum featured earlier this year. They've done a great job in packaging it up in retro style using lovely line drawings to illustrate the tips. It's on sale in their shops for £3, with all money going to John Lewis Foundation.

The classes take place at four selected John Lewis shops at end of this month and over October and they are encouraging you to bring along any clothes and accessories in need of updating. The classes are free to attend, though apparently you will be charged for materials used.
