Robin Day Polo barstools

Day_stool

If someone asked us to name an affordable design classic, the first thing we would say is likely to be the Robin Day Polo Chair. Designed back in 1973, it was the world's first indoor/outdoor polpropylene chair, complete with an eye-catching and timeless appeal, not to mention being very useful. So it's no surprise to hear that we also like the Robin Day Polo barstools.

Based on the original 1973 design, this variation isn't a million miles away from the standard chair, only this time there's the added height of the chrome frame – the seat part is identical. And like the standard Polo, it's available in a seemingly endless range of colours (not just the pink above).

More expensive than the £49 chair, the barstool will set you back £89, which still keeps it in that 'affordable' bracket.

Five of the best: 60s-style cameras

60s_camera

As part of an ongoing series of buyer's guides at our Modculture site, we thought it might be a good idea to pull together a selection of stylish 60s-style cameras. So that's exactly what we have done.

Based on looks, functionality and price, we've tried to cover all bases, all price points and a mix of digital and film cameras. We could have stretched to 10 in truth – although I'm not sure how long the page would be!

Check it out via the link. We are thinking of doing a series of buyer's guides on Retro To Go, so if you've any suggestions of what you would like to see in them, do let us know.

Another gem from the forthcoming Dwell range, this 60s-style high gloss dining table.

Loving that cone base, round surface and of course, the high gloss black exterior, which is likely to be both eye-catching and a magent for fingerprints.

The table is able to accomodate four people, sized around 74cm high, with a diameter of 120cm. New in this week, priced at £399.

1960s Scandinavian style utensil jars from Berry Red

Berry red jars

If you are looking for a quick, cheap and practical way to liven up your kitchen, Berry Red are selling these stylish utensil jars. The Berry Red website describes them as Scandinavian looking and they do remind me of Grete Prytz Kittelsen's 'lotus' pattern that she designed for Catherineholm, Norway in the 1960s. Even if you aren't completely convinced by that comparison, their simple pattern and colour will slot in easily to many different style kitchens.

They come in three sizes, perfect for all your storage needs, and range in cost from £8 for the small jar up to £15 for the large jar.

Gherkin tile by ATADesigns at The Look Boutique

Tile_Gherkin_ATAD5632

The Look Boutique, whose previous focus has been selling new fashion and accessory designers, has just launched an interiors collection. The collection includes decadent looking armchairs and chandeliers, but the collection from ATADesigns – including these Gherkin tiles – is probably of most interest to Retro To Go readers.

The tiles are based on a very contemporary building: Norman Foster's 30 St Mary Axe, of course otherwise known as the Gherkin. However, the geometric patterning and colour scheme means when several are placed together they have a distinct retro feel and a unique look. Each tile costs £11 but there is a minimum order of a pack of six tiles.

Mom Rocking Chair

179-large

The company Contraforma was just established in this decade, so its Mom Rocking Chair obviously isn’t a vintage design, but still it would sit well in a retro lounge.

Its simple design is made more appealing by its soft wool covering and the addition of a distinctive motif to the sides and backrest. The chair can be upholstered in any two of choice of 60 colours of Europost fabric, which gives a huge amount of choice to ensure it fits with your décor.

All of this great design does however come at a price – £1,370 no less. If you are undeterred by the price, visit Moleta Munro for further details.
