Brown Flower Applique Flight Bag from Debenhams

Brown flower bag

Keeping bags classic has its virtues, but when it's something you carry around on a regular basis sometimes your accessories need some sparkle. This Flight Bag from Debenhams treads the line between making a statement and subtlety perfectly.

Made from 100% leather, this bag's structure is simple and classic in a rich deep brown. The flare and retro touch is added by some well done floral applique detailing, also in leather. The colour palette of burnt orange and cream gives a rich seventies look that makes this fun and luxurious at the same time.

Get it from Debenhams for £79.

Vintage Handbags by Marnie Fogg

Vintage_handbags

Following on from Vintage Fashion, Vintage Furniture and Vintage Shoes, Marnie Fogg has produced another hardback gem for the vintage collector – Vintage Handbags.

Vintage Handbags covers 100 years of handbag fashions, showing iconic and groundbreaking styles from each decade, ideal if you want a reference guide of if you're just looking for some inspiration in the bag department. Check out  Elsa Schiaparelli’s mesh bags for Whiting & Davis in the 1920s, the Hermès Kelly bag in the 1950s through to the Fendi Baguette of the 1990s and just about everything in-between. If that's not enough, there are also archive images, fashion photography and specially commissioned photographs of period pieces.

With a foreword by Anya Hindmarch, the book will be on the shelves via Carlton Books in September 2009, priced around the £25 mark (although Amazon is already doing pre-orders for a discounted price).

Imogen shift dress by Monsoon

Monsoon imogen

Simple shift dresses never go out of style, especially when they look as classic and timeless as this Imogen Dress by Monsoon. Perfect for a lasting retro look for a huge range of occasions, this is a wardrobe staple in the making.

The dress uses a classically sixties shape that's more grown up than the minis of the time, thanks to the pencil skirt style. The demure, high neckline is balanced with a little bit of flesh thanks to the sleeveless cut. Finally the bright orange shade is perfect for creating a classic look with an injection of fun, ideal for a sixties highend vibe.

It's available from Monsoon now for £75.

Wildflower jumpsuit

For a daringly individual take on the thirties look, forget the more obvious flapper styles and check out this Wildflower Jumpsuit from French Connection UK.

Combining the masterful use of loose fit and draping that defined the era's aesthetic with a cute jumpsuit cut, this piece gives a cleverly modern take on a very vintage inspired look. The print gives feminine class, while the silhouette keeps this girlish and perfectly suited to the thirties era's glamour and bodyshapes. It's also available in navy.

Tribal Print Handbag from New Look

New look tribal bag

We love Orla Kiely's fantastic prints and bags here, but for many of us they're not within our budgets. Much to our surprise and delight, this Tribal Bag from New Look has a definite air of her influence for a fraction of the price.

The retro style 'tribal' print looks perfect in these seventies shades, and is set off with a simple wooden handle design. As always, scaling down in price means doing the same in quality, but for a good looking bag with some seventies chic this is a great little bargain.

It'll set you back £20 from New Look.
