Miami Retro collection at Next

Miami retro

Next have undergone a push lately in order to shed the image that they're only good for workwear and undies, and it seems to be working well for their womenswear section. For retro lovers, each new season has proved quite lucrative, and this Spring/Summer is no different.

The new Miami Retro collection is something of a mishmash of influences, but there are some pieces worth seeking out. The Bardot top (right) is a great, basic homage to Brigitte that's instantly recognisable. Elsewhere there is a variety of 1950s and 60s influenced pieces that are perfect everyday wardrobe fillers and very reasonable prices. It might not all be on the money, but it's certainly worth a look.

Retro Rags vintage bar logo t-shirts

Retro rags

Truly original retro t-shirts are a rare delight, and while the Keep Calm and Carry On brand has the quintessentially British retro logo sewn up, a taste of Americana is worth a look-in. Retro Rags have come up with a great idea for t-shirt designs in the form of genuine vintage bar signage from across the US.

Featuring famed drinking dens from Detroit, LA, Chicago and New York, the artwork on display is well worth immortalising. Sadly, many of the bars themselves are long gone, but the iconic imagery remains uniquely placed in American culture. The two logos show are two of the many great designs, available on both men and women's tees.

Ossie Clark Georgie yolk neck dress

Ossi clark georgie

Back in the sixties, Ossie Clark and his label were known for their ethereal style cut and fantastic fabrics. The brand carries on a definite retro aesthetic to this day, expanding tastefully on Clark's vision. The signature prints have been reinvented in the new collections, with classic dress patterns that will become wardrobe treasures.

This Georgie dress, available in midi and maxi lengths, has the stylish print choices synonymous with Clark, with classic elegance too. The overall effect is more of an early seventies folk style, with a high end designer treatment. The fabrics and cut combine to make these dresses look like the genuine article.

They're available from My Wardrobe online for £483 and £531 (from left to right).

Miss Real Nautical gold button trousers

Nautical trews

Skirts and dresses in a retro theme are everywhere, but finding trousers can be a challenge for many eras. It's no surprise, given how new women's pants were in the 1950s, but some of the design from the decade provides fantastic inspiration.

These Miss Real nautical trousers are a great homage to the pinup girl nautical obsession of the 1950s. Taking the matelot buttons and colour scheme that featured on shorts and skirts, these trousers provide a more practical, wearable item for every day.

They're available online from Oli online for £30.

Tory Burch Alize mini bag

Tory burch

The riviera style glamour of the 1970s has been much maligned in the years hence, but it wasn't all Margo from The Good Life (though that's no bad thing either). Design classics with a splash of colour were a great part of the big design houses' output, and it still influences today.

This Tory Burch Alize Mini bag has classic lines in block coloured leather. It very much looks like a timeless accessory given some flair via the colour palette, which is no bad thing. With an understated branding, it's chic and not over the top, while the chain link strap gives a little bit of glitz and glamour.

It's available online from Net-a-Porter for £276.

Deco dress by French Connection

French connection

Shirt style dresses might seem a relatively modern invention, since they're constantly revamped by design houses and high street alike. The truth is, they've been around for longer than most of us, and are a great way to get some 1930s style, when they're done just right.

This French Connection Deco dress is a great example of how to get the pre-war version just right. Combining the masculine collar and sleeves with an ultra feminine skirt and print make this ideal. Fitting perfectly with the beginnings of androgyny in womens fashion at the time, this treads the line well. The muted, elegant colours of the dress make it look classically retro too.

It's available from French Connection UK for £75.
