The New Vintage range at Oasis

Oasis_new_vintage

Oasis have been channeling vintage inspiration in their main designs for a number of seasons now, but with often questionable degrees of success. It seems a smart move, then, to go all out with their New Vintage range, consisting of updated and/or reproduced vintage finds.

Taking inspiration from the twenties and thirties with their jewellery and a handful of drop waist dresses, they’ve tapped into a growing trend for pre-war styles with flair. Less enamouring, though, are some of the 70s inspired pieces, which are a bit on the lacklustre side.

Charles Anastase retro coat

Anastase

If you’ve got the urge to buy a very sensible coat that goes with everything, but don’t need yet another black wool number, grey is a great, safe option. This Charles Anastase coat has great looks and is wearable with almost every outfit.

The Peter Pan collar and high double breasted buttons give this a dolly-ish 60s look, but the sharp grey wool rescues it from looking cutesie. With riding coat style black accents on the pockets and back, this coat has classic written all over it.

Unfortunately, it’s by no means a bargain style, at £1028 from Matches Fashion.

Sherwood Peep Toe shoes from Topshop

Topshop_shoes

Looking back through the annals of fashion history, it’s sometimes hard not to get irked by the eighties. While forties fashion kick-started many of the fantastic tailoring shapes and techniques we love, much of the more flambouyant themes of the decade have already been ‘done’ by designers in the eighties. Not a problem most of the time, but when the eighties ruined things, it really went to town.

That means that shoes like these Sherwood peep toes from Topshop can be worn either way, though good design thankfully stands the test of time. Wear them with your eighties clobber, or for a more sleek look try a forties style tea dress and set hair.

£55 from Topshop.

Rosette Jacket by Fever

Rosette_jacket

Just because it’s becoming increasingly horrible outdoors, doesn’t mean that outerwear choices are confined to longline jackets and winter coats. If you’re looking for a more sleek jacket that’ll still keep you suitably warm, this Rosette Jacket by Fever isn’t half bad.

Taking inspiration from a few decades gone by, this jacket combines retro flavours with modern rather well. While the mix of 40s, 50s and a hint of 80s might not be to everyone’s tastes, it’s a little bit funky and very unusual.

Thanks to the winter-friendly wool mix fabric, this one will set you back £100 from Oli.

Cherry Picked Vintage and Brand New retro at Umi & Co.

Umico

Finding vintage pieces of quality and style on a site that’s easy to use is a tall order at times. Umi & Co. pleasantly surprised when I first clicked on to find a great range of vintage and pre-loved items sitting next to their existing designer collections.

Each vintage piece is of excellent quality, and handpicked for it. This wonderful handbag is a 1960s piece and is still in unbelievable condition. The Tilly Bloom eye chart necklace is one of the many new retro pieces by a collection of independent designers, which sit wonderfully alongside the vintage collections.

Sparrow Halter Dress by Rock Steady

Halter_dress

Rock Steady clothing do a great line in the simplistic but still quirky end of 40s/50s retro. Thinking more diner chic than rockabilly rebel, this little Sparrow Halter Dress is a classic, cute choice.

Available from online boutique, Plasticland, this is one of many retro designers available from their shop, all seemingly picked for their independent design credentials, and their sense of fun. The black trim of this dress, especially at the collar, adds a little bit of sassy edge to what would otherwise be somewhat saccharine.

Get it from Plasticland for $68.
