I will be doing a round-up of some of the best lighting soon, but for now, I’ll focus on the handmade retro rocket floor lamps by Harvest Moon.
I love handmade because all too often it’s the small makers creating some of the more interesting designs. Yes, you can buy midcentury modern on the high street these days. But if you want something a little more niche, have a look at the independent shops.
Plenty of those on Etsy, including Harvest Moon. They make lamps and more specifically, they make a lot of these rocket lamps, The kind of design you might well have seen in 1950s and 1960s homes, but a design you don’t see a lot of today.
Very much of the atomic age, the lamps are held together by three professionally hand-shaped dark brown mahogany legs that are securely fixed with stainless steel fittings and vibration washers. A bayonet-style bulb provides the brightness and a cord with inline switch deals with the power.
But that’s only half the story. This is also about the fabrics that make up the shades. Plain colours if you want them (and plenty do) but also something more cosmopolitan if you want to create more of a talking point or go further down the retro route. It’s your choice.
With that in mind, I have picked out a few examples for this page, but do check out the full range on the maker’s site. Note also that prices vary depending on the size. There are standard sizes as well as some taller lamps for a small amount more.
So working down the page, the lamp with the geometric fabric is available for £130, the tall orange lamp is £145, the lamp with the retro ray guns fabric is £130, the tall mustard yellow lamp is £145 and the tall natural linen lamp is again £145.
You can browse all the selections at the Harvest Moon Lamps Etsy website.
