James Brown retro-styled artwork at General Pattern

Brown

No, not the sadly-missed singer, this James Brown is a London-based illustrator – and his retro-styled artwork is available to buy on the General Pattern website.

Check out all the prints on the site, but we like the two above, Voodoo and Bags. The first is a two colour screenprint on zerkall printing soft white paper sized at 38.5 x 53 cm, which you can buy for £40.

The second print is a one colour Linocut on off-white sugar paper, sized at 40 x 50cm. You can pick that one up for £20.

Warhol Colouring Book

Warholcolouring

If there was ever an artist whose work was suited to appearing in a colouring book, it is Andy Warhol.

Sadly, the Warhol Colouring Book doesn’t feature his iconic pop art portraits, but a collection of his less famous drawings of animals and other pictures. It is a large format book with 24 pages for colouring. And dare I say it, it would make a great Christmas present for wannabe artists of all ages.

It costs £10 from the National Galleries of Scotland shop.

The One Ton Show, Shoreditch Town Hall, London

Waterloosunset

The One Ton Show at Shoreditch Town Hall brings together 100 artists, illustrators, graphic designers, photographers and print-makers to sell their work for just £100.

Why the retro interest? As well as the £100 restriction, the show has a theme of “London Lyrics” so all of the pieces are inspired by London-related songs. This has resulted in some great pieces inspired by favourite songs from the past, including “Itchycoo Park”, “Dedicated Follower of Fashion”, “Rain Fall Down”, “Down at the Type Station at Midnight” and “Electric Avenue”. Unsurprisingly, The Clash feature heavily with several pieces namechecking “London Calling”.

Perennial Retro to Go favourites, People Will Always Need Plates” are exhibiting at the show and above is their piece inspired by The Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset”.

The show runs from Thursday 4th December to Sunday 7th December at Shoreditch Town Hall. Further details can be found The One Ton Show website.

Christies’ Pop Culture auction in London

Marquee
The forthcoming Pop Culture auction at Christies is something of a mixed affair, covering everything from pop art to film posters and music memorabilia. And one item in particular covers all bases.

This is a Quadrophenia poster from the 1979 movie – but it’s not any old Quadrophenia poster. This is actually a prop from the movie, announcing The Who’s upcoming residency at London’s Marquee club. I can’t say for sure whether this is a mock up or a copy of an original – maybe someone out there knows?

Sized at 76 x 51cm, it’s selling for what sounds like a fairly reasonable £300 – £500, especially when you consider how unique this item actually is. Find out about the poster and all the other lots via the link below – the auction takes place at the South Kensington auction house in London on 4th December 2008.

Shag’s latest limited edition print – In Search Of Tiki

Shag_tiki

Shag’s love of all things Tiki continues to inspire his artwork – indeed his new In Search Of Tiki print features very little else.

We love it – both for the subject matter and that rather cool green and brown colour scheme. In fact, I’ve already found a spot for it in the living room. Just 250 being made available, all 16-colour serigraphs and sized at 58 x 73cm.

Signed and numbered by the artist (as you would expect), the print officially goes on sale tomorrow. But if you follow the link below, you can get in before the masses. it retails for $250.
