Keep Calm And Carry On t-shirt

Keepcalm_tshirt Well, we featured the original poster a year ago, then we had the tea towel and screenprint, so it was only a matter of time before someone produced the Keep Calm And Carry On t-shirt.

It might sound like a quick cash in, but the t-shirts look to be of good quality and with plenty of limited edition colours to choose from, including red (in keeping with the original wartime poster), blue (pictured here) and a bright yellow in the women’s sizes.

All are fitted shirts made from 100 per cent cotton – and all retail for £20 each.

Retro Postcards: Sheraton Washington Hotel

Sheraton I can’t resist picking up vintage postcards when I’m browsing junk shops, which is reason enough to start a new series of posts under the Retro Postcards banner. And we’ll kick off with this gem from the Sheraton Washington Hotel.

Now, I’ve never been to Washington. Indeed, I’ve never been to the US – but if the Sheraton Washington Hotel still looks like this, I’m calling the travel agent tomorrow. A great example of 70s excess, from the chrome pillars and chrome-clad stairwats through to the space age seating. I also like how the image has been slightly stretched to fit the format.

Have you been to the hotel? Does it still look like this? Let us know. And if you have scans of quirky postcards, send them in – we’d love to feature them.

60s In Colour canvas art

60scolour

Torn between some photography or some art on your wall? You should check out this rather smart canvas art by 60s In Colour.

60s In Colour is artist/photographers Brian Bignell and Diane Thornton, who have used their skills to produce colourised effects from Brian’s original black and white photographs of well known sixties groups and solo artists taken during the period 1963 – 1966. The results are shown in the above images of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Roger Daltrey. And if they don’t appeal, there’s a number of other acts to choose from.

Prices vary dependent on the canvas size you want, but typically start from £58.

Magnum Force movie canvas print

Magnum_force Film poster art can have real impact on your walls – and that’s certainly the case with this Magnum Force canvas print.

Clint Eastwood’s second outing as “Dirty” Harry Callaghan is really brought to life here – with an almost 3D effect of the man and his gun. This isn’t your average print, it’s a print on canvas – and ready to hang on your wall.

Sized at 70cm x 70cm and with a canvas depth of 45mm, it retails online or instore at Habitat for £75.

Bloomsbury’s Andy Warhol auction

Warhol_volks As the years pass, the market for Andy Warhol works shows no sign of diminishing. And if you want to get your hands on one, you need to get yourself down to the Andy Warhol auction at Bloomsbury.

The usual array of work – from authentic pieces to prints. I would say something to suit all pockets, but even the prints are the cost of a new car! If you are after something quirky, how about Volkswagen, Warhol’s take on the VW Beetle, sold as a limited run of prints in 1985. Sized at 38 x 38 inches, it;s a silkscreen on Lenox Museum Board, signed in pencil by the man himself. If you want it, you’ll need to bid in the region of £12,000 – £15,000.

The auction takes place on Wednesday 20th June at Bloomsbury, 24 Maddox Street, London, W1S 1PP.

Jasper Johns by Barbara Hess

Johns Yesterday we mentioned that Jasper Johns was one of the artists to feature at the forthcoming Pop Art Portraits exhibition at London’s National Portrait Gallery – and right on cue, Taschen has brought out a new book about the man – Jasper Johns by Barbara Hess.

It’s part of Taschen’s Basic Art series, so ideal if you want a basic introduction and a little bit more. Johns, one of America’s most important artists of the 20th century, is probably best known for his ‘flag’ paintings of the 1950s (the Museum of Modern Art in New York recently paid over $20 million for White Flag), along with other bold themes that use (amongst other things) targets, numbers, letters, and maps.

This book covers that and much more, with over 100 illustrations and a detailed chronological summary of the artist’s life and work. You can pick it up for £5.99.
