Dansk Congo Ice Bucket

CongoiceThe Congo Ice Bucket was designed for Dansk by Jens Quistgaard back in 1955.

Whereas most ice buckets are made from plastic, this one is made from teak with an orange plastic lining. It owes its distinctive shape to the Viking helmet and it is pretty big, standing at around 40cm high.

Despite their age, they do seem to come up quite frequently on Ebay with recent examples selling for between £35 and £95.

If you don’t want the hassle of bidding on Ebay, Pineapple Ice Bucket currently have one on sale for £100 or Our Show Home has one for £165.

“Hypocrisy of Disco” by Clane Hayward

Hypdisco"Hypocrisy of Disco" is a memoir about growing up in communes around the San Francisco area in the 1970s.  Its author Clane Hayward was born just before the "Summer of Love" and this first installment of her autobiography deals with her early life with her unconventional parents, as she and her siblings are moved around.

The author does not paint a rosy picture of the alternative lifestyle, but tells a story of abject poverty, hunger and the uncertainty for a child growing up in this environment.  Not the most positive portrayal of the counter-culture, it is nontheless well-written and interesting to see another perspective on this period.

It is available in hardback from Amazon for under £10.

Recycled Tin Bouquet

TinflowersFor those without a garden or impatient for flowers to grow, here is an interesting alternative from Uncommon Goods – Recycled Tin Bouquet.

The bunch of bright coloured blooms will add a touch of summer to your home or garden without the messy, hardwork of gardening.  Perhaps not as environmentally-friendly as growing your own flowers, nonetheless the flowers are made from recycled tin.  Evidence of the tin’s former life has been left in as there are still bit of nail and rust, giving each flower a unique look.

The Bouquet of six flowers costs $50 (approximately £26) from Uncommon Goods.
