Boss space age table lamp

Boss_lamp
Minimalism is the name of the game for the Boss table lamp.

Designed by Lee West, it is very reminiscent of the space age designs of the late 60s to mid-70s – and wouldn’t look out of place on the set of Space 1999. In terms of construction, it’s made of a matt opal glass with oval cutout for the light effect and a transparent cable.

Available online from Ligne Roset and actually in the sale, it is selling for £122.40, down from £136.

Prices for the case start at around $125 (which is around £60).

Mid-century style Double Rocker chair from James Design

Double_rocker

A new design with a distinctly vintage look – the Double Rocker from James Design is a real head-turner.

This British-made seat is made from oak hardwood, with a choice of upholstered finish to match your home/room. But best of all, it takes a mid-century style rocking chair and turns it into a very stylish seat for two.

Sadly, we can’t give you a price, with that particular information being ‘on request’. Which usually means expensive, although you could drop the company a line to confirm.

B&B Italia Metropolitan Armchair – perfect for the budding Bond villain

Metropolitan

If you want to be a criminal mastermind, you need three things – a cunning plan, a cat and a big chair to swing around in. Something like this B&B Italia Metropolitan Armchair.

It’s a fairly new design (2003) by Jeffrey Bernett, but with a flowing look rooted firmly in the 1960s. In terms of structure, the chair is made of tubular steel with Bayfit flexible cold shaped polyurethane foam for comfort and a choice of upholstery for the finish. The base is either spokes or disc, whatever you prefer.

Available online, you can pick one up for £1,366 – no doubt paying for itself after you’ve held the world to ransom.

David Gilmour’s classic 1970 Black Strat Fender Stratocaster guitar reissued

Fender_gilmour
Want to make your band sound like Pink Floyd? Well, maybe you’ll need to do a spot of practice – and perhaps buy David Gilmour’s classic 1970 Black Strat Fender Stratocaster.

This ‘Signature Model’ is being issued by Fender on 22 September 2008, created by Fender and Gilmour and based on the one Gilmour bought in 1970 and used on albums including ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’, ‘Wish You Were Here’ and ‘The Wall’.

The ‘Black Strat’, which features the same maple neck, black pickguard, shortened tremolo arm and custom electronics as the original, will come with a custom black case with a centre pocket, plush green lining and ‘Fender Custom Shop David Gilmour Model’ embroidery, not to mention a book about the guitar, authentic strings, the same cable Gilmour uses, a deluxe Fender guitar strap and a ‘David Gilmour’ guitar plectrum. No price given – but don’t expect it to be cheap.

V&A’s Cold War Modern: Design 1945-1970 exhibition

Globe
We’re giving you an early heads-up about this one, just in case you fancy a late summer break in the capital and something to do while you’re there, as the V&A’s Cold War Modern: Design 1945-1970 exhibition looks a real winner.

It’s mid-century plus, covering the era and beyond, the rise of consumerism and art and design from both east and west. Works by Alberto Giacometti, Pablo Picasso and Asger Jorn will be included in the art, while the architecture and design will include Eames, the Smithsons, Le Corbusier and Buckminster Fuller. There’s also ceramics, textiles, metalwork and print works, a look at urban projects of the era and indeed films of the period.

It runs from 25th September 2008 – 11th January 2009 – and no doubt, we’ll see  few interesting bits and pieces in the V&A Shop in conjunction with it. We’ll certainly keep you posted on those.
