Retro home for sale: Long Wall in Suffolk

Longwall

Got £695,000 spare? You could be the proud owner of what’s been described as on one of the finest post-war houses in Britain – Long Wall in Suffolk, a Grade II listed building which was designed and completed by Sir Philip Dowson (of Arup Associates) in 1963.

And it’s still true to that design, having been refurbished referencing the original plans by architect Hugh Pilkington in 1995.  The three-bedroom house takes its name from the long brick wall that runs through it and extends to the back and the front, providing privacy and shelter. It also has a large open plan reception room/kitchen that leads to a brick terrace and two acres of garden and a swimming pool. The low-lying house is also glazed on three sides – giving a real sense of light and space.

Check out the Modern House site for more details, images, the floorplan and the full background. It’s not cheap, but it’s a better investment than that mock Georgian footballer’s place down the road.

Jasper Johns by Barbara Hess

Johns Yesterday we mentioned that Jasper Johns was one of the artists to feature at the forthcoming Pop Art Portraits exhibition at London’s National Portrait Gallery – and right on cue, Taschen has brought out a new book about the man – Jasper Johns by Barbara Hess.

It’s part of Taschen’s Basic Art series, so ideal if you want a basic introduction and a little bit more. Johns, one of America’s most important artists of the 20th century, is probably best known for his ‘flag’ paintings of the 1950s (the Museum of Modern Art in New York recently paid over $20 million for White Flag), along with other bold themes that use (amongst other things) targets, numbers, letters, and maps.

This book covers that and much more, with over 100 illustrations and a detailed chronological summary of the artist’s life and work. You can pick it up for £5.99.

Snowball vintage-style USB microphone

Snowball More vintage-style technology, this time with the Snowball USB microphone, which offers recording to your PC with a piece of kit that wouldn’t have looked out of place next to a 50s crooner.

Vintage looks, but for very modern activities, like recording tracks for saving on your PC (such as a guitar break or a vocal) or if you do a spot of home DJing or podcasting, it’s ideal for that too. This professional-quality microphone plugs straight into your PC or Mac, requires no additional software to work and packs in plenty of functions to fine-tune your input.

Available with a stand and the USB cable, it retails online for $99.95 (around £50).

Aertex Paul Weller polo shirt

Aertex_axe
Yet more Paul Weller-related clothing, although this is claimed to be a replica as opposed to being endorsed.

According to Aertex, this Axe polo shirt is a special edition replica of the polo worn by Paul Weller on the cover of The Jam’s Beat Surrender. Now I thought that cover featured a girl with a flag, but if you can place this top, please let us know in the comments below.

Anyway, it’s 100 per cent cotton, with button-down collar and a fairly slim fit, retailing for £44.99. The company also has some other interesting retro-styled tops, so the website is well worth a look.

Christies 20th Century Fashion and Accessories auction

Apple_dress
If you visit certain high-profile vintage stores, you could be forgiven for thinking that shopping for vintage is an expensive business. Well, it doesn’t have to be – in fact, you can pick up some designer vintage bargains at the Christies 20th Century Fashion and Accessories auction.

Every era is covered, from early period fashions through to 60s and 70s classics, along with plenty of bags and add-ons to match – all with matching designer labels. But there’s bad news for the blokes – virtually every lot is women’s fashion, with the exception of a few ties and a rather smart smoking suit from 1900.

If you have some cash to spare, you might want to invest in these two mini dresses (pictured) from the short lived, Beatles-funded Apple Boutique, which was only open from December 1967 to July 1968. They’re estimated to make between £800 – £1,000.

The auction takes place at the South Kensington branch of the auction house on 7th June 2007.
