Retro Retreat: Jumbo Hostel, Stockholm-Arlanda, Sweden

Jumbo1

Fancy joining the jet set? You can at the Jumbo Hostel, Stockholm-Arlanda, Sweden.

The name says it all really – a vintage jumbo jet (1970s Boeing 747) converted into a hotel, standing at then end of the runway at Stockholm airport. And it's done with a retro theme, from the uniforms of the staff on-board to the 70s-style fixtures and fittings in cream, blue and orange, sitting alongside some original plane fittings for authenticity.

The Ray by Quiksilver – 70s-style eco-friendly watch

Theray

Eco-friendly, hand-built and oozing 70s style – what's not to like about The Ray by Quiksilver?

The watch is hand-built from sustainable real ebony wood, as well as recycled stainless steel, aluminum and mineral glass, with a 27 jewel automatic movement that requires no battery and a cool 70s-style display that could pass The Ray as an authentic period piece.

Except of course this is a new watch – and a limited edition too, with 1,000 in production. If you want one, get your order in now – it sells for $495 (around £354).

Orcus secretary desk by Konstantin Grcic

Sec_desk1

Reminiscent of the Merrow Associates designs of the late 60s and with definite modernist influence, the Orcus secretary desk by Konstantin Grcic, is certainly a stylish piece of furniture.

Why secretary desk? Well, if you pull down the front (as you'll see from the image over the page), you get an office desk, with a writing service of black leather, support for a laptop and room for any cables you might need. There's also four drawers, six shelves and a lockable secret compartment.

And in terms of looks, it has a real walnut veneer, with a frame of chromium-plated steel tubing. If you want one, it will set you back around £3,500.

Virgin Atlantic’s 1980s throwback advert

Cheers to Andrew for flagging up Virgin Atlantic's latest ad – a re-creation of all things 1984, which was the year the airline opened for business.

By that we don't mean George Orwell, we mean miner's strikes, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Our Price and…erm…the mobile phone (even though that wasn't around until a year later).

Anyway, check it out below…

Eileen Grey modernist Menton table for ClassiCon

Menton

Stylish modernist design at its best – the Eileen Grey Menton table for ClassiCon.

Created for Grey's home near Menton in 1932, it's a versatile table that can used high (as above) as a dining table or side table, doubling up as a low coffee table with a quick bit of juggling around. So in effect, you're getting two tables for the price of one, each packing chromium-plated steel tubing and a top that also doubles up as a black or grey surface, both with beech wood edging.

The only downside is the hefty price – around £1,600.
