Sixties-style Bubblerack

BubbleRack_main

The bubblerack is one of those treasured things, something practical that also manages to look good. Primarily a coat rack, the retro bubbles shaped design could also double as a piece of wall art. The rack is made from powder coated steel and is available in the suitably sixties colour options of white or orange.

The rack is designed by an American company called Wallter and costs $145.

Limited edition Hitch Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair

Hitch

It's unlikely to be cheap, but the limited edition Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair is almost certainly going to be a sought-after piece when it lands in the coming weeks.

It's a collaboration between official manufacturer Fritz Hansen, publisher of the most recent Hitch Hiker book Penguin and Irish designers Lost Weekend – the latter working with author Eoin Colfer and the blank canvas of a white version of the classic 1958 chair for an artistic image of Earth exploding.

Aside a cow print cushion, it's every bit the classic Egg Chair you would expect from Fritz Hansen. Although it's likely to be much harder to find this one as it's limited, as you would expect, to just 42. No news on those going on sale as yet, but we would expect them at high-end design stores before Christmas for a serious outlay.

Eames Small Dot mugs

Eames small dot
Add some style to your morning cuppa with these Eames Small Dot Mugs. The Small Dot pattern is based on a textile design Ray Eames produced in 1947 for a competition at MoMA. The design looks so quintessentially Eames that it's hard to believe that at the time it didn't go into production, only recently having been reproduced from archive drawings.

The mugs are available in red, charcoal or orange and cost £7.99 each.

eBay watch: 1970s Philips stereo 22AF 200 portable record player

Philips1

It's go some time to go yet, but for us, this Philips stereo 22AF 200 portable record player is the bargain of the moment on eBay.

A 1970s design, but quite a sophisticated one, this mains-powered player packs away into a small carry case, looking pretty cool like that too. But open it up and you can remove the sides, which double up as two speakers, offering that stereo sound on the go. There's even dual volume controls, one for each speaker.

Sold in that orange colourway, it's currently up for just £1 (plus some postage from Germany). Yes, an absolute steal. Check out the record player opened up over the page or check out full details at the eBay site.

Portmeirion Magic Garden limited edition coffee pot

Magic garden coffee

Another company highlighting their heritage: in 2010 Portmeirion celebrates 50 years. They've been looking through their archives and produced a collection inspired by Susan Williams-Ellis' archive designs. This coffee pot is based on a similarly shaped pot they found that was covered in William-Ellis' hand-drawings. These drawings were the basis of the Magic Garden design, which began to be manufactured in 1970. The design looks as current now as it must have done back then.

While mugs with this design are readily available, this coffee pot is limited to an edition of 500. Each pot costs £65.
