Mondaine’s 1940s-inspired large wall clock

Mondaine
We covered the watch some time back, but now the classic Swiss Mondaine Clock is available for your home.

New for 2008 as a large wall clock, but anything but a new design – it was the work of a Swiss railway employee (Hans Hilfiker) in the 1940s, designed to be easily readable from a distance, with a red second hand to enable passengers to judge precisely when trains would arrive and depart. The Swiss Railways obviously being more punctual than the British ones.

It has a stainless steel case, quartz movement and a diameter of 40cm, with power by 2x AA batteries. You can pick one up for £190.

Ilmari Tapiovaara 1950s Maija floor light

Floor

A Finnish design that’s now over 50 years old – but the Santa & Cole Maija floor light will still make an impact in any room.

Designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1955, the lamp is not dissimilar to a pile of stacked plates, combining to create a luminous honeycomb effect. There’s also a very 1950s matt brass base, with the whole thing standing at around 70cm tall (which means it should be good for a floor or table).

Available online, expect to pay around £640.
