Holmegaard issues lost Verner Panton New Wave lighting

Panton_holmegaard

Ok, here’s the background. Verner Panton designed the New Wave lighting range back in 1984 for Danish design house Holmegaard. But Holmegaard and indeed the 1980s wasn’t ready for it, so the designs were left to gather dust in the Holmegaard basement. Until now that is.

Because it’s finally been issued by the company, looking every bit the contemporary lighting range – showing just how ahead of his time Panton was. Choose from a table lamp, floor lamp, wall lamp or pendant, all with an undulating surface that’s as much sculpture as lighting.

Prices start at £247.

Alvar Aalto Tea Trolley

Aateatrolley_3

A new study has been reported this week that claims tea has health benefits. So we’ll all be drinking more tea until another study contradicts it next week, but in the meantime, why not serve your tea in style, with Alvar Aalto’s Tea Trolley.

Introduced at the Paris World Fair back in 1937, it was based on a design created for a tuberculosis sanatorium, but this version was updated for domestic use.

It is available to buy online from Bauhaus 2 Your House, priced $2,359 (approximately £1,200). Admittedly that is a lot of money for a trolley, but the greatness of this one has been recognised by MoMA who have a one in their permanent collection.

Emeco introduces Ettore Sottsass-designed Nine-0 seating range

Emeco

We mentioned Ettore Sottsass earlier this week when covering the classic Olivetti Valentine typewriter. He died in 2007, aged 90, but before his death he designed the Emeco Nine-0 seating range.

The design for all the chairs is an update of the classic (and modernist-inspired) Emeco 1006 Navy chair, used in submarines from 1944. The new versions come with a hand-brushed or hand-polished aluminium frame with a soft polyurethane seat and in some cases, a back too. The range includes stacking chairs, armchairs, office chairs and bar stools.

The chairs were on display at the Milan furniture show in April, but are just drifting into stores now. The US retailer Design Public currently stocks them, with prices starting at the equivalent of £190.

George Nelson Turbine clock

Turbine

We haven’t featured anything by George Nelson for a while – reason enough to highlight this George Nelson Turbine clock, originally available back in 1957 and now back in production via Vitra.

The name is obviously no coincidence, with that ‘turbine’ look a real eye-catcher in brass. There’s also an aluminium centre and some distinctly individual hands, with the clock powered by high-grade quartz workings.

Powered by a single battery, it retails for £289.

Bengt & Lotta Iron Lamps

Bengtlottalamps

Best known for the iconic Moose design, Swedish designers Bengt & Lotta take inspiration for many of their designs from traditional Scandinavian folk art. That tradition can be seen in their series of Swedish Iron Side Lamps.

The lamps are more than just mere lighting solutions, as they more like sculptures. The collection takes in abstractions, animals, angels and people, but all have that unmistakable Scandinavian look.

They are available to buy online from Fjorn, priced $325 (approximately £170).
