Melia Orgasm space age coffee table – only available by auction

Orgasm

We’re big fans of Melia, having previously featured the Gino and Pants tables. So we’re pleased to see yet another cool pice of design from the company – the Melia Orgasm space age coffee table.

The first edition of The Orgasm will be finished using macassar ebony veneer on the outside and ivory lacquer on the inside (different to the finish shown here), as well as being fitted with clear glass on the top and bottom. And it’s a limited edition, with all 300 of the initial (and collectible) tables being sold by auction eBay from March 1st.

You’ll find more details of both the table and the auction over at the Melia site.

Sarah Young Fabric Kits

62510_marmaduke Artist Sarah Young’s work includes prints, paintings and a lovely collection of one-off dolls made from vintage materials. The dolls are absolutely charming, dressed in clothes from different eras, but sadly rather expensive at around £400 each. To create something more affordable and that links the dolls with her usual work, Sarah has created two Fabric Kits.

The kits consist of a textile sheet with an image of either a lady (Bertha) or a cat (Marmaduke). Both designs feature floral patterns that are reminiscent of mid-century Scandinavian fabric designs. The sheet also includes instructions for making them into dolls or if stuffed with something heavier, doorstops. Alternatively (if you aren’t one for crafts) the sheets can be left whole and used as teatowels, although that would seem rather a waste.

They cost £20 each and can be bought from Sarah Young’s website.

Mauricio Klabin Eclipse lamp

Eclipse
Dating back to 1982, but with more than a hint of the 1950s is the Eclipse lamp by Mauricio Klabin.

The Eclipse was part of a series of objects described as ‘cocoons’ due to their rounded form, internal volumes and capacity to change, this particular one being picked out for the permanent collection of MoMA’s Department of Architecture and Design.

It’s fabricated from a single strip of polypropylene attached to a steel frame, allowing the lamp to be opened or closed to varying degrees – which means the shape of the fixture can be altered to expand or reduce the amount of direct light or change the angle of illumination. Available again from Bodie & Fou from March onwards, it retails for £72.

Eero Saarinen Womb chair

Womb_chair
Not the most obvious Saarinen design, but the Womb chair from 1948 is still an eye-catching piece of furniture.

A fairly early design, but very much ahead of its time, the Womb chair was made exclusively for Knoll and is still in production by the company. It’s designed to facilitate a relaxed sitting posture, aided by a moulded fibreglass shell that’s covered by a foam cushion. Support comes from steel rods with a polished chrome finish or matte black power coating.

Available in a range of upholstered finishes, prices are around £2,350.

Verner Panton’s Relaxer Rocking Chair

Relaxer_millerstripeRocking chairs are often pigeon-holed as being for either the elderly or for children, perhaps appealing to those age groups because they are comfortable or fun. But there is no reason why the rest of us shouldn’t enjoy a rocking chair too, especially when we can add ‘stylish’ to its list of attributes as is the case with Verner Panton’s Relaxer Rocking Chair.

Originally designed in 1974, they were only available in limited numbers back then so became something of a collectors’ item. But seeing its potential popularity, Matzform re-released the Relaxer in 2004. Its available to buy from several retailers, including DDR, where prices start at 1090 Euros (approximately £820) for plain fabric upholstery with prices rising for the striped option pictured here or leather coverings.

Thanks to Martin Kuijpers for the tip off about this chair.

Hemline Stationery set from Fred Flare

565_829

Due to my adoration of vintage fashions, I could easily spend my days poring through pages of those old dressmaking patterns.

Seen as something of a kitsch art form these days, Fred Flare have cleverly rumbled a gorgeous little writing set featuring some vintage inspired designs.

The Hemline Stationery set retails at just $9.95, and it’s going straight on my personal wishlist.
