Victorian Valentine’s cards go under the hammer at Bonhams

Victorian_valentines
Finding a unique card for your loved one on Valentine’s Day is never an easy job – but it could made easier with a trip to Bonhams on February 12th.

The auction house has 34 Victorian Valentine’s cards up for auction on that day, all original and carefully decorated with lace, paper, fabric flowers and leaves. They’re also very collectible too – and should grow in value as the years progress.

Estimates vary between £80-150. Which is slightly more than a box of Milk Tray and one of Hallmark’s finest.

Nintendo Gameboy bricks for your patio or drive

Gameboy_bricks
Fancy giving your patio a unique look? You could pave it with Nintendo Gameboy bricks.

Yes, these are shaped like old ‘brick’ Nintendo Gameboys, the work of an obsessive Dutch Nintendo fan who wanted to pave his drive with Gameboys. And once he’d mastered that, he decided to sell them on to anyone else who fancied a quirky drive/patio.

The one downside of it is the price. A brick – heavy that is it – doesn’t come cheap via mail order. Which means an asking price of just over 31 Euros per brick. Multiply that for a drive and you’re talking serious cash – so maybe just buy a few for a feature area.

Klippan Blom – Quant-style cushions

Klippan

A high-end cushion with a very familiar look – the Klippan Blom.

The design is obviously inspired by the Mary Quant ‘Daisy’, available in a variety of colourways including the green and cerise featured here. In addition, there’s a full feather core, with the outside a felted merino wool.

Sized at 46 x 46cm and as you’d expect, not cheap – they retail at £50 each.

Pierre Paulin’s Orange Slice Chair

Orangeslice

Much like the word vintage, iconic is a word that is over-used, but the Orange Slice Chair by Pierre Paulin is surely one piece of furniture worthy of that honour.

Designed in 1960, it is one of Paulin’s series of chairs for Artifort that combine an inner structure of steel tubing with foam and fabric to create a structural piece. It is still being manufactured today by Artifort and it can be bought online from several place, including from Modern Classics Direct where they cost £399.

They are available in a wide selection of colours, although ironically it seems, not orange!

Visit Modern Classic Direct to view their selection.

High-end wallpaper retailer Cole & Son has launched the Vintage Glamour Collection, re-creating 16 authentic designs from  the 1920s to the 1950s, the kind of thing once found in mid 20th century ocean cruise liners, hedonistic hotels and haute couture.

Conran Matador wingback chair

Conran_matador

A great design and great upholstery on this Conran Matador chair.

It’s a classic wingback chair – a simplified take on the gentlemen’s club chairs, ideal for relaxing in and having a nap. And if the design isn’t enough, check out that cloth – there isn’t enough detail about it on the site, but it screams mid-century Scandinavian.

Available now, you can order the chair from £795. The stool is extra, priced from £285.
