Dwell Loop leg TV unit

Looplegtvunit

After Christmas with all those new DVDs to watch, you might also be thinking about somewhere to store all the mess presents. How about this Loop leg TV unit from Dwell?

TV units are usually a bit dull and unstylish, but this one from Dwell has some styling reminiscent of Merrow Associates with its walnut veneer and stainless steel handles and loop legs.

As well as its good looks, it is also really practical as it has three drawers each of which holds approximately 84 DVDs or 126 CDs, so if one of your new year’s resolutions is to tidy your DVD and CD collection this may help you on your way. It is h47cm x w180cm x d60cm.

It comes assembled except for the legs and handles, and costs a very reasonable £395.

Kay + Stemmer 50s-style Flow sideboard

Stemmer

Sarah Kay and Andrea Stemmer have built up an impressive reputation as cabinet makers and interior designers, primarily for one-off and bespoke items. But now they’ve moved into retail in conjunction with Heals, with the first range available going under the name Flow.

The collection includes a desk, nesting tables, a bookcase and this 50s-style sideboard, which is made of walnut and oak and features a slide-opening front, along with the flowing curves that give the range its name.

Not cheap at £1,695 for the sideboard, but an incredibly stylish item for your 50s-styled home.

ILVA’s retro Padua sofa range

Ilva_padua

ILVA, the Danish home furnishing chain, has offered up some great retro design this year, including the modernist Casa lamp, the space age Funghi lamp and the Kobe ceiling light. And if you’re after a sofa, check out the company’s Padua range.

There’s three sofas in the range – a two-seater, three-seater and a corner unit/chaise longue. All use the same 70s-style design, using wood and leather – more specifically, palisander veneer and black leather.

A nice alternative to the Robin Day sofas from Habitat, prices start at £650. Check out the ILVA website for the location of your nearest store.

Eileen Gray Bibendum Chair

Bibendum
The Bibendum Chair by Eileen Gray is a design classic, and believe it or not was originally designed in the 1920s, but still graces many of today’s many modern spaces.

Designed in 1929 by Gray, it was named after the Michelin’s mascot Bibendum Man, as it shares the same curves. Despite her great designs Eileen didn’t receive widespread recognition until she was in her nineties – but luckily for us they continue to be produced today, so we can show our appreciation belatedly.

The base of the Bibendum Chair is chromed tubular steel, and the upholstered seat is available in various fabrics and leathers from the Aram store, who own the copyright to the Eileen Gray name and products.

However at the moment SCP has one in the sale reduced from £2245 to £600 in black leather, which seems like a great bargain.

Retro Rooms: Barb Wolkins

Barbnew_1 Next up to show their Retro Rooms is our first from the US – Barb Wolkins. I’ll leave the explaining to Barb – check out more images after the turn:

"When I bought this home in Payson, just north of Phoenix (Arizona) last year, I planned to decorate it with all 70s and maybe some 60s. To this end, I painted all the originally white walls, made a 70s "disco lounge" complete with original Asteroids machine from 1979, an original "Diskotek Disco Stereo", 70s bar, my Abba collection, and various other 70s icons of electronics and tackiness."

"I did the orange wall in the living room myself as well as making the 3 huge wall hangings from original Dutch 70s material. All my furniture, right down to the Christmas tree decorations, are from the 70s. In the kitchen, I have original 70s kitchenware, dishes, pots/pans, cookbooks, mixers, silverware, etc.  I painted the kitchen a green. I did the guestroom in 70s along with painting one wall with a 70s inspired wall graphic from a 70s wall graphic kit I bought!"

Good work. And if you want to show off your home, a room or even a corner of a room with some smart retro items, take a snap and send it over with a few words to [email protected] and we’ll be glad to feature it. Read on for more of Barb’s images.
