Coke Salt & Pepper set

529It is a widely acknowledged truth that coca cola tastes better from a glass bottle. Whether salt and pepper are any better from a Coke bottle however remains untested, but you can give it try with this Coke Salt & Pepper Set.

Unlike the classic bottles, the set isn’t made from glass but from chrome, shaped to look like bottles. The dispensers sit in a matching chrome caddy.

The set costs around £18 from Happy Days.

Türlitoaster – 50s-style kitchen classic

Turlitoaster
I’ve had to rely on Google Translate to get the full details on the Türlitoaster  – but I can tell you for sure that this is a stunning piece of design from 1959 – and you can still buy one today.

Originally made in Switzerland in the late 50s, this a mechanical toaster that pre-dates the pop-up toaster. Stick in your bread, toast one side, then use the flip mechanism to toast the other side (without burning your fingers). The downside is that you need to use our judgement to decide if it’s toasted – automation only went so far in the 50s.

Yes, it mans more work but I think you’ll struggle to find a cooler toaster in any kitchen. Available online for 49 Euros (around £34).

‘The Trip’ Coasters

ThetripPart exploitation movie, part psychedelic journey, the 1967 film ‘The Trip’ is a cult classic. Directed by B-movie maestro Roger Corman with a script by Jack Nicholson and starring Peter Fonda, Susan Strasberg, Bruce Dern and Dennis Hopper, it certainly have all the sixties cult credentials.

The film probably isn’t to everyone’s taste, but if you are a fan, then you may like these, ‘The Trip’ coasters from Etsy-seller, Kate Black. The Brooklyn-based designer has made these coasters from original magazine advertisements for the film, which reflect the dream-like quality of much of the movie.

The coasters are priced $17.99 (approx £9) and the seller will ship worldwide. Visit Kate Black’s Etsy shop for further details.

Gastone Trolley by Kartel

Gastone_folding The Gastone Trolley, designed by Antonio Citterio for Kartel isn’t strictly speaking from the past as it was first designed in 1991, but serving trolleys always conjure up images of the 1970s, in particular Abigail’s Party.

It is available in a range of colours, including a rather retro shade of plum. It is smaller than the trolleys of the Seventies and easily folds away for storage. So why not put on your best clothes and invite the neighbours round for pineapple and cheese on sticks and a bottle or two of Blue Nun?

It is available from DesignME priced £367.
