Panton Heart Cone Chair

HeartconeIts Valentines Day next week so here is a stylish suggestion for a gift for your loved one that will last longer than a bunch of flower or box of chocolates – the Panton Heart Cone Chair.

Designed in 1959, it is a slight variation on the better known Cone Chair. It is available from Nest in a choice of seven colours, but for a Valentine gift, it really has to be the red.

Sadly it does cost more than the average romantic gesture. With 10% off at Nest at the moment, it still costs around £1,650.

Retro TV photo frame

Tv_frame
Fancy appearing on TV? It’s easy enough with this retro TV photo frame.

Just slip in a photo (well two actually, this is double-sided) and you get to appear on the cartoon-like retro screen. And with two images in place, you can just turn round the TV when you get bored of one / fall out with a friend / split up.

Available in three colours, you can pick one up for £4.99.

M&S Jaquard Graphic Abstract Duvet Cover

GreyduvetDependable Marks and Spencer might not be a hotbed of retro design but from time to time it does come up with something worth a mention, such as this Jacquard Graphic Abstract Duvet Cover.

The online production description refers to it as contemporary, but I would beg to differ as its pattern is a very retro op-art design in a subtle blue-grey colour. It is available in a range of sizes, costing from £29.50 for the single duvet cover and going up to £59 for the super king size.

Visit Marks and Spencer’s website to buy online.

Verner Panton’s Relaxer Rocking Chair

Relaxer_millerstripeRocking chairs are often pigeon-holed as being for either the elderly or for children, perhaps appealing to those age groups because they are comfortable or fun. But there is no reason why the rest of us shouldn’t enjoy a rocking chair too, especially when we can add ‘stylish’ to its list of attributes as is the case with Verner Panton’s Relaxer Rocking Chair.

Originally designed in 1974, they were only available in limited numbers back then so became something of a collectors’ item. But seeing its potential popularity, Matzform re-released the Relaxer in 2004. Its available to buy from several retailers, including DDR, where prices start at 1090 Euros (approximately £820) for plain fabric upholstery with prices rising for the striped option pictured here or leather coverings.

Thanks to Martin Kuijpers for the tip off about this chair.

Pierre Paulin’s Orange Slice Chair

Orangeslice

Much like the word vintage, iconic is a word that is over-used, but the Orange Slice Chair by Pierre Paulin is surely one piece of furniture worthy of that honour.

Designed in 1960, it is one of Paulin’s series of chairs for Artifort that combine an inner structure of steel tubing with foam and fabric to create a structural piece. It is still being manufactured today by Artifort and it can be bought online from several place, including from Modern Classics Direct where they cost £399.

They are available in a wide selection of colours, although ironically it seems, not orange!

Visit Modern Classic Direct to view their selection.
