’50s style mirrored dressing table from Graham and Green

50s style mirrored table

Graham and Green manage to do glamorous retro furniture very well as evident in this 1950s influenced mirrored dressing table from their autumn collection. With its mirrored surfaces, it looks the ideal place for any aspirational Hollywood star to do their maquillage or perhaps it could be used as a desk to answer fan letters.

It's part of a '50s style angled range designed by Jamie Graham which also includes a chest of drawers and a cabinet, meaning the look can be carried through to the rest of the bedroom. Prices start at £299 for the chest of drawers with this dressing table costing £330.

Eero Aarnio space age Piccolo Table

Piccolo

A design that was produced to accompany a 1960s classic, but only appeared around 40 years later – the Eero Aarnio Piccolo Table.

It was designed to go with the 1966 Cognac armchair (which we featured last week), appearing in 2008, but with the same late 60s looks as that original seat. Available in glossy black or white, the table is made of fibreglass with two levels and standing at a height of around 60cm, with a diameter of around 55cm..

There's only one drawback – the price. To get one, you'll need to shell out 1,690 Euros.

The Pattern Sourcebook: A Century of Surface Design

Pattern sourcebook

Of the huge amount of pattern design books being published at the moment, The Pattern Sourcebook: A Century of Surface Design stands out from the crowd. It's partly because of its size: 350 illustrations are crammed into 304 pages. But it's also because of its approach. The author, Drusilla Cole, has selected patterns from the last hundred years, from fabrics, wallpapers, ceramics and other mediums which are ordered within the book by aesthetic, rather than chronological, reasons. This means contemporary creations sit next to retro designs and it's a lesson in inspiration, not history.

Artistic legends such as Henry Moore and Eduardo Paolozzi sit alongside Retro To Go favourites like Marimekko, Angie Lewin and Mark Hearld of the St Judes Gallery, whose work is used on the cover. Something to dip into time and time again, amazingly the book only costs £13.97 on Amazon.

70s-style Twist Table by Design House Stockholm

Twist_table

A modern design that takes inspiration from the past – the Twist Table by Design House Stockholm.

Eye-catching as well as useful, this 70s-style space age table has a very apt name – those shelves can 'twist' to create a table that can change design as well as being able to change shape to fit into a variety of spaces, as well as upping the number of uses.

Standing around 59cm tall, it's available now, priced around 369 Euros.

John French Photography Calendar

99714a

Best to get in quick and buy yourself a calendar before a relative can buy you a “cute” kittens one for Christmas. My suggestion would be the John French Photography Calendar from the V&A.

Each month features a gorgeous black and white photograph from the V&A’s archive of French’s work. The images date from the 1950s and 1960s, and include photographs of fashion model as well as icons such as Jean Shrimpton.

The calendar costs £9.99 and can be bought from the V and A Shop.
