Robin Day 1960s Club sofa

Day_club

A stark contrast to yesterday's functional Q Stak chairs, the Robin Day Club sofa is a stylish mid-century design that's every bit at home in the modern living room.

Obviously inspired by the classic 1950s Florence Knoll sofa, this particular design was introduced by Day in 1962 as a modern take on the Chesterfield, becoming Britain's first-ever 'cube sofa' at the same time.

Built around a stainless steel frame, you can take your pick from a two or three-seat sofa, along with an armchair and footstool, all available in either leather or fabric, plus an 'eco' version made from recycled wool fabric. Prices obviously depend on your choice, but as a guide, the armchair starts at £995 and the sofas at £1,295.

Studio Clock by Charles Rennie Mackintosh

160707fgifts02

Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed this wall clock for the studios in the Glasgow School of Art around 1899. This may make it one of the oldest clock designs we’ve featured, although of course the one available to buy now is a reproduction.

Despite being created on a limited budget, the clock still bears Mackintosh’s signature style. It features dark stain oak with screen printed numerals.

It is available to buy online form The Glasgow Girls, priced £68.51

McDonald’s Pre-Happy Meal Toys from the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies

Prehappymeal

Apparently there are serious collectors of the toys given away with McDonald’s meals. Hence the need for this book “McDonald's Pre-Happy Meal Toys from the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies” by Joyce and Terry Losonsky.

Although I’m not a collector of such toys myself, I’m intrigued by this book as a record of a bygone age. The authors have produced similar guides covering more recent times since the Happy Meal was introduced in 1979, but this period looks more interesting. As well as photographs of the toys, the book also includes detials of jingles, slogs and advertisements used, so it should be a fascinating read for anyone with an interest in advertising too.

It is available to buy from Amazon for just under £20.

Retro red suit separates by Michael Kors

Michael kors

Suits can, for many of us, feel like something dull for the office and have often gone out of favour as a fashion choice. Thankfully, designer numbers have still got plenty of style and vibrancy, providing a great retro ensemble.

This Michael Kors suit is an eye-catching, figure flattering cut that's ideal for bringing suits into your fashion wardrobe. The cut of the short sleeved jacket has a fifties feel without looking like a costume while the pencil skirt slims and flatters. Finally, the stunning shade of red is undeniably appealing and takes the suit up a notch in impact.

The jacket and skirt are sold as separates from Neiman Marcus, allowing you to get a perfect fit off the peg.
