Al & Jo Classic Piet – Mondrian-inspired storage unit

Mondrian_cabinet

Work of art or functional furniture? With the Al & Jo Classic Piet, you get both.

Al & Jo is an Italian design house, bringing together artists, cabinet makers and engineers to produce items using all of these skills – like the Classic Piet. As the name (and look) suggests, this is inspired by Mondrian’s coloured blocks of the 1920s. But it’s not just about the art – beneath that surface is an MDF storage unit with four drawers and four cabinet areas with Minimax Ferrari hinges, stood on an iron treated stand (for a rust effect).

Just 10 of these are being made, each selling for 5,220 Euros.

Mitch O’Connell tattoo-inspired retro art

Mitch

Whether it’s as a retro-inspired artist or an old school tattoo artist, you really should check out the work of Mitch O’Connell.

Everything from mainstream magazines and comic books through to tattoo designs and caricatures are in his portfolio – all of which you can discover on his website. And indeed buy from his site – like the giclee prints above.

Just two examples from many above – all printed in seven colours using archival inks (for longer life), each signed and numbered by the artist. To the left is Hell On Wheels, inspired by cult movie star Tura Satana, which is an edition of 40 and Rock ‘n’ Roll Angel, part of an edition of just 20. You can pick them up for $110 each, which is around £55. If you want more, a book of tattoo designs called (unsurprisingly) Mitch O’Connell Tattoos is also available.

And thanks to Colleen for flagging the artist up.

Remember the Celia Birtwell camping range for Millets we previewed a while back? Well, it’s instore and online right now to order – and it’s not just tents – there’s also accessories like a dining set, wellington boots and this rather smart Celia Birtwell Golf Umbrella.

Ideal for campers or those of us living in a rainy climate, the large umbrella features a distinctive Celia Birtwell vintage print and automatic opening, should you get caught in a shower.

And best of all, it isn’t that expensive either – you can pick one up for £14.99.

Darlings of Chelsea introduce mid-century-inspired Maya armchair

Darlings

It packs all the wooden curves of a mid-century design, but this Maya armchair from Darlings of Chelsea is actually a modern piece.

Designed as a telephone chair – or indeed for anywhere requiring a table/chair, the Maya is handcrafted, with a low back, soft cushioned fabric seat and spiral side table, with a choice of fabric (plain or patterned) available for upholstery and natural, cherry, walnut or wenge available for the chair legs and spiral table.

If I have one reservation, it’s the spiral finish on the table, which looks out of character from the rest of the design – but you can opt not to have one if you wish. Prices are around £330.

Barbarella Weekender Toilet Bag

BarbarellaweekenderzoomZPM claim that their Weekenders are “beloved of travellers everywhere and seen in all the best bathrooms”. We couldn’t possibly say if this is true or not, but regardless their hanging toiletry bag is incredibly practical and comes in a several retro patterns.

Perhaps the most kitsch, but fun is the Barbarella Weekender. In hues of pink, yellow and orange, it has a cartoon of Jane Fonda’s cult character amongst rockets, moons and planets. It has five pockets inside to organise your toiletries and a swivelling hook to allow you to hang it up.

It costs £36 and can be ordered directly from the ZPM website.

Jellio Squirt Gun Tables

Candytable_lg3Jellio’s ethos is combining childhood fun with interior design. This results in some weird and wonderful pieces of furniture that incorporates toys you’ll remember from the past.

The Candy Table is one example of their work. It is called Candy because that is what they think the effect looks like but the table top is actually filled with squirt guns. The table is made from clear acrylic with the top filled with plastic guns. It is available in various colours.

It costs $350 (approximately £170), although it isn’t clear from their website whether they ship outside of the USA.  Visit the Jelio website for further information.
