Orla Kiely retro tents

Orla_tents

You may remember the Orla Kiely wind-up radio from a few days back. Well, as part of that same camping range, there’s also these rather cool Orla Kiely retro tents.

The Orla Kiely Dome Tent will fit three people under its double skin, has a flysheet with double seams, storage pockets and is easy pitch, with all the poles being colour-coded. It even has a retro carry case. The Orla Kiely Teepee Tent is quick pitch, with an integral groundsheet and single steel pole. Once up, that will hold six people.

Both are available now only from Millets, priced at £59.99 for the Dome Tent and £99.99 for the Teepee Tent.

Lytegem Lamp by Michael Lax

Lytegem More forward-thinking design, this time from the hand of Michael Lax and his Lytegem Lamp from 1965.

It’s back out as a commemorative edition from Lightolier, still offering a telescopic neck that adjusts from 6.5 inches to 15 inches and a lamp head swivel of 360°. Which means you get the light exactly where you want it, as well as that heavy cube base to make sure it stays in place after all that movement.

Sold in a choice of colours and with the lamp’s unique original packaging and bulb, it sells for $125 online, which is around £70. Sadly, I’ve not been able to find a UK retailer as yet.

Mini Rubiks Cube for your mobile phone

Rubiks_mobile I should stop trawling the quirky Japanese websites, there’s too much temptation for buying odd novelties. Like this Mini Rubiks Cube for your mobile phone.

It’s designed to hang from your mobile phone, so instead of mindlessly sending out sms messages to people you hardly know when you’re bored, you can engage your brain a bit more creatively by trying to solve this small-size cube, which by rights should easier than the full-size one.

Available in Japan now, you can pick one up for the equivalent of a bargain £1.29.

Charles and Ray Eames Collage watch

Eames_collage Another quirky timepiece, this time the Charles and Ray Eames Collage watch.

Why Eames? Well, the face on this Acme-made watch based on an Eames design – certified by the Eames Office too, just in case you need reasurance. Other than that, it’s a pretty straightforward watch with a 1.37-inch face, black leather strap (white and orange plastic also available) and with a presentation box to keep it in.

Limited edition and getting more scarce all the time, it retails for $135 (around £70).

Retro home for sale: Augustus John Studio in Hampshire

Augustus_2

Fancy a modernist house with a history? You might want to get saving for the Augustus John Studio in Hampshire.

As the name suggests, this Grade II-listed building was built for the artist Augustus John in 1933, with a design by celebrated architect Christopher Nicholson. Located in Fordingbridge in the New Forest, it consists of three bedrooms and a bathroom on the ground floor and a large, light open plan space on the first floor that incorporates a living room, dining area, kitchen and cloakroom. The first floor was the space used by John as a studio and features in-built window seats on which his models would have posed.

It’s a stunning property that comes with a third of an acre of land and its own private driveway. And if you have £699,000 to spare, it could be yours.

Sanna Annukka retro screenprints

Sanna Sanna Annukka is an emerging talent in the art world, so picking up one of these Sanna Annukka screenprints could be a shrewd investment.

Sanna is half Finnish and half English, with the art obviously influenced by traditional Scandinavian design, along with a hint of the 70s too in our opinion. But whatever you think, they’re really eye-catching pieces of art, typified by this Sunrise screenprint, which is sold on 300gsm Fabriano 5 paper in an edition of 50, each at 50x70cm and signed and numbered by the artist.

It retails for £260. Check out the site for the rest of range of screenprints and lithographs.
