Peter Blake: Alphabet at Hove Museum & Gallery

Blake_girl Peter Blake is one of our favourite artists, and we have already recommended a visit to the retrospective exhibition on a Tate Liverpool. However for those of you who live anywhere near Brighton there will soon be the chance to see his Alphabet series of prints at the Hove Museum and Gallery.

Alphabet is a set of bold and colourful silkscreen prints, one for each letter of the alphabet, produced by Peter Blake in 1991. Alphabet characterises Blake’s method of working, incorporating images from postcards, magazines and popular ephemera. My favourite is H for Heart, but you can look through the whole alphabet to decide which one you like best.

The exhibition is a touring exhibition from the Hayward Gallery and runs in Hovefrom the 14th of July until the 9th of September.

Fila Vintage Matchday jacket

Fila_matchday One piece of clothing from Fila’s archives is instantly recognisable – the Fila Vintage Matchday jacket.

It was the Bjorn Borg signature jacket when we was defeating all in his wake during the late 1970s. And it’s back in a range of colour schemes, including this green and white one and made from 70% acrylic and 30% wool. It also comes complete with a presentation box.

Note also that these are a very slim fit, so order a size up if you order online. They retail for around £64.

Tankbooks – classic fiction in vintage-style cigarette packets

Cig_books1 If you’re in England, you’ll know that there’s a smoking ban on the way from July 1st. And if you really want to annoy someone in a public place after that date (and possibly risk arrest), you should pull out a Tankbook from your bag.

Tankbooks are a genius piece of design – literary classics miniaturised to fit into a cigarette packet. And the packet is absolutely authentic too, right down to the flip-top lid, cellophane wrap and foil insert. Get through all that and you have a complete version of either Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, Ernest Hemingway’s The Undefeated and The Snows of Kilimanjaro, Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis and In the Penal Colony, Rudyard Kipling’s The Man who would be King, The Phantom Rickshaw and Black Jack, Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and finally, Leo Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilych and Father Sergius.

Each comes in a box that’s almost identical to a leading brand of cigarettes, but with the book title replacing the trade name. As you’d expect, they go on sale as the ban comes in on July 1st from Waterstones, Borders, Books Etc, Blackwells, Foyles, Magma, Design Museum, American Retro, Selfridges, Urban Outfitters and Paul Smith. Each retails for £6.99.

See over for an image of all the packets together.

Hergé’s Adventures of Tintin tours the UK

Tintin_play I used to be a big Tintin fan, right down to the haircut – so I’ll be buying a ticket for Hergé’s Adventures of Tintin, a theatrical version of the classic cartoon strip, which starts a UK tour from Saturday 28th July, kicking off at the Watford Palace Theatre.

Based on the book Tintin in Tibet, Hergé’s Adventures of Tintin follows our hero, his loyal dog Snowy and Captain Haddock as they battle to rescue their friend Chang lost in a plane crash in the high Himalayas. With time running out, and rumours of the Abominable Snowman prowling the peaks, it’s a testing time for our fearless young reporter and his friends.

The team behind it have a string of West End successes behind them and the first performance of the show in late 2005 got excellent reviews. So if you’re a fan, it might be worth getting along.

Edition Space 50s-style speaker system

Space71 Frustratingly, I can’t find a price or specific sales details about this Edition Space 50s-style speaker system – but it’s such a stylish object, we had to feature it.

The Space 071 (to give it the official name) is a sound system, but with the looks of a classic piece of 50s furniture – or even a radiogram. The looks are down to the hand of designer Bernhard Lenz, while the internal sound system is the work of Trenner & Friedl, noted high-end speaker designers. Combined, you get the best of design and technology in a choice of woods and colours. Not to mention a good place to stick a vase when you don’t want to play your tunes.

As I said earlier, I don’t have a price or retailer for this, though I suspect it isn’t cheap. However, you can contact the Austrian manufacturer directly via its website.
