Paul Catherall Trellick Tower linocut print

Catheralltrellickgrey
We like to bring you a bit of culture every now and again by featuring some of our favourite artists. Paul Catherall is one of the UK’s leading linocut print makers, and produces images of iconic landmarks using a palette inspired by commercial art of the 1950s and 60s, and we think his Trellick Tower print is great.

As you may have noticed we like Trellick Tower, we’ve featured it before on mugs and plates, and tea towels so Paul’s print of Trellick Tower really caught our eye.

The print is available in a limited edition of 15 and is 44 x 31cm, and costs a reasonable £250 plus delivery costs, from Clapham Art Gallery.

If Trellick tower doesn’t appeal to you it is still worth checking out Paul’s other prints which feature many London landmarks including the Oxo Tower, the Gherkin, and Centrepoint.

Becker Mexico – satellite navigation like a 1960s car stereo

Becker_mexico

The problem with satellite navigation systems (apart from them taking you the wrong way) is that they all have absolutely no style. That’s a criticism you can’t level at the Becker Mexico, which has just become available in the UK.

It’s based on a 1960s car stereo in looks, but in terms of functionality, it’s every bit 2007. First off, it offers satellite navigation in 34 countries in a variety of languages, along with traffic updates and display of the speed limit wherever you are. But that’s not all.

Lily Allen Lily Loves range for New Look

Lilyloves
Lily Allen
is well known for her signature look of retro ballgowns and trainers – and her new Lily Loves collection for New Look allows you to emulate that style with a range of dresses and accessories she has co-designed.

The dresses are the stand outs in the collection – and I particularly like this full dress. Available printed or plain, with frills and a prom style, it has a great 50s look. And a lot of dress for the money at only £55.

If you like it, there’s also some great court shoes for only £30 and other accessories in the range that would match up a treat.

See the full range on the Lily Loves website.

Thomas Sabo charm club

Thomassabo

We’ve not featured any jewellery for a while, but this charm bracelet by Thomas Sabo deserved a mention.

There was a time when every girl would have had a charm bracelet, and built up the charms as she received them as presents for birthdays, key events and souvenirs.

Thomas Sabo has tried to capture this spirit with his Charm club which features a range of retro charms. There are a whole range of girly and kitsch charms including handbags, hearts, flip-flops, and even the eiffel tower.

The charms start at £15.95 but you could build up your collection gradually, and encourage people to buy them for you add to your bracelet.

Eames Rar rocking chair

Eames_rar Think rocking chairs and you think elderly grandparents, or even worse, Val Doonican. But they can be quite stylish if you pick the right one – and one that’s very right is the Eames Rar rocking chair.

Like all great design, it’s ahead of its time. Amazingly, this rocking chair dates back to 1950 – and 57 years on, it still gets a reaction. The Rar uses a polypropylene seat on a wire base with chrome-plated cross struts and stained maple runners.

As you would expect, this isn’t cheap, but at £345, possibly cheaper than you may have thought.
