Minimalist target clock

Targetclock
I can’t say I’m a big fan of target-based merchandise. Yes, it’s a symbol that still says "mod" like no other – but it’s just a little overplayed and has suffered badly through association with downmarket clothing retailers like Lambretta Clothing.

However, I’ll make an exception for the Giant Target Clock from Doghouse. It’s minimalist look is very appealing and you can imagine it being a great focus on a large plain wall.

It measures approximately 15cm X 5cm X 22.5cm and is available for the incredibly cheap price of £12.99 from The Doghouse online store.

Shag’s Australian exhibition

Shagpicasso Even if you’ve not heard of Shag, I’m guessing you’ll have seen his work somewhere – from the Pink Panther box set to packets of Hint Mints, Shag’s retro cool seems to be everywhere right now.

And he’s got a new exhibition opening at the Outre Gallery in Australia entitled "On The Shoulders Of Giants", which runs in Melbourne from Apeil 22nd to May 23rd and in Sydney from April 29th to May 28th.

If you’re not in Australia, why should this worry you? Well, exhibitions mean limited signed prints – very collectable and reasonably priced. Outre ship worldwide, so you could grab yourself some cool art that should only gain in value. And if you’re feeling flush, you can join Outre’s waiting list to buy an original piece of art.

For more information on the Outre Gallery, visit www.outregallery.com and if you want to know more about the artist, check out www.shag.com.

Suzuki’s retro LC car

Suzukilc
The Japanese love of retro motoring continues with this Suzuki effort – the LC concept, which was unveiled by the company towards the end of last year at the Tokyo Motor Show.

It’s a bit like the Nissan Figaro after Noddy has made a few personal modifications. This 10.5 ft long two-seater is designed for pottering about the city. It has a 660cc engine and four-speed automatic gearbox. Inside it’s all tartan cloth and the usual retro dashboard.

Sadly, Suzuki still hasn’t decided whether to put this into production. Go on lads, you know you want to!

Spaceman Oval watch

Spaceagewatch I love watches from the 70s – forget understated charm, these are watches that are big and bold, representing a time in watch design when innovation and forward thinking was at a peak.

There are various websites that specialise in timepieces from this period, my personal favourite right now is Watch Odyssey, which has some great designs and clear visuals so you know what you’re buying. Many of the watches demand a hefty price, but if you want a good starting place, check out the Spaceman Oval (pictured) in green. A design classic created by André Le Marquand and inspired by an astronaut’s helmet.

It will set you back £185 – a small price to pay for such an iconic watch.

Nissan’s retro car range: Nissan Figaro

Something very strange happened in the late 80s. A company not particularly known for a maverick approach to design, announced the arrival of a range of retro cars for the Japanese market. Yes, we welcomed in Nissan’s retro car range. Read more

Teddy Girls gallery

Teddygirls Contrary to popular belief, the "teenager" didn’t suddenly materialise in the 60s, nor did they emerge at the turn of that decade (as brilliantly described in Colin MacInnes’ Absolute Beginners). The start of youth cults started as back as the early to mid 50s, as rationing finally ended and a defined group emerged between children and adults.

The original Teddy Boys and Girls pre-date rock ‘n’ roll – they created their look as a reaction to conformity and post-war poverty, they danced to big band sounds and they blazed a trail for all youth cults that followed.

Ken Russell’s photos of the original Teddy Girls (aka Bombsite Boudiccas) from 1955 are now online. Looking both menacing and years ahead of their time amongst the bomb sites of London, these fantastic photos are available to buy online as both prints and art cards at very reasonable prices. The images are also available to galleries for public display.
