eBay watch: 1970s Philips 5120 portable record player – mint and boxed

Philips

It's the format they've been trying to kill off for decades. Yet despite that, there's a lot of us out there who still love vinyl. So this Philips 5120 portable record player is well worth a look.

It's not a new player, it's from the 1970s. But it is 'new' old stock, sold with the original box and instructions, as well as being in 'mint' condition. Not a bad looking player too, not least in that very '70s orange.

Powered by mains and batteries, it plays 33 and 45rpm records in 7 or 12-inch size and has that clear lid finishing things off. Right now it's at £1.60 with no reserve.

eBay watch: 1950s George Nelson desk by Herman Miller

Desk

Sadly the auction is out of America, but the seller does offer worldwide shipping of this stunning 1950s George Nelson desk by Herman Miller.

we actually featured this desk in 2007 when it was reissued, with an asking price of a hefty £2,936. We're not sure if this is an original 1958 version or a reissue, but either way, it's an official one by Herman Miller, which is the important thing.

Solid walnut sides, a white laminate top, four hardwood dividers, chrome-finished steel-tube legs, adjustable glides and a 'grommet' for cable management are the features, with the seller claiming it is in 'excellent condition' and 'shows hardly wear'. Bidding right now is at £6.20.

eBay watch: 1972 Mercedes Benz 250ce car

Merc

Oozing 1970s cool comes this 1972 Mercedes Benz 250ce. Perfect if you are looking to pull off an old school gangster look.

According to the seller, this 'pillar less coupe' has a 'genuine' 89,000 miles on the clock of the 2,496cc engine and comes with the original manuals and lots of invoices. It's automatic, with two doors, a light brown leather interior and from what we can see, pretty much everything original (or replaced as original), with the possible exception of the stereo.

The seller is looking for offers of £5,600 for a car he claims is 'surprisingly cheap' on insurance and free of road tax. You might want to check the former before you bid though. Lots of images on the listing page if you want to see more.

eBay watch: Harvey Guzzini 1970s tulip-base table lamp

Guz

An interesting design that's certain to be popular on eBay, this Harvey Guzzini 1970s tulip-base table lamp.

The rarer Guzzini designs are always sought after and this is likely to be one. The sellers believes it is rare and I've not seen one like it myself. It is a Guzzini – the label is still on  it, on the white inner of the perspex shade, which is a 'caramel' colour on the outside. The base is brushed steel.

According to the seller, it is in 'excellent condition' and 'perfect working order', with three bulbs required for full illumination. If you want it, bidding right now is at £38.25.

eBay watch: 1968 Citroen DS ID19 car

Citroen1

As far back as 2007 we were showing our love for the Citroen DS in this site. These stunning motors get rarer by the year, but they do occasionally crop up on eBay – as is the case with this 1968 Citroen DS ID19 car.

The ID series was a more simplified version of the DS, lacking the power steering and some of the hydraulic controls of the original, but still sharing that stunning and iconic exterior.

eBay watch: Original Festival of Britain Design in the Festival book

Festival

Do a search for Festival of Britain on eBay, you'll be amazed at what you find. Everything from stamps and coins through to glasses and teapots, most of it for not a lot of cash. Why an I telling you this? Well, this year is the 60th anniversary of the Festival of Britain, a celebration of post-war Britain and all it offered. Lots of reproduction material is likely to hit the market, but something like this original Design In The Festival book is far more interesting – and not too expensive.

It's an original publication produced by the Council of Industrial Design and according to the seller, one of the 'scarcer publications' of the event. Certain to appeal to midcentury fans, it is a fully illustrated review of British goods including sections on furniture, textiles, ceramics, electrical appliances, motor cars and cameras. Also numerous pages of contemporary advertisements, many in full colour.

132 pages including covers and in 'generally very good clean condition', the book is up now at £14.95.
