Sailor Swing Dress by Stop Staring!

Stopstaringnavy

Military influences have carried throughout fashion eras, with each putting its own stamp on the inspiration. Few did it quite so well as the naval-inspired looks of the forties and fifties, however, taking nautical uniform firmly into women's fashion.

This Sailor Swing Dress by Stop Staring! is a pitch perfect interpretation of that look, with a simplistic but effective piece. The contrasting white trim creates real impact at the collar and waist, while the swing style skirt balances the silhouette to create that classic body shape.

It's available online from Stop Staring! for $138.

Baracuta 1950s-style G35 Dean Windcheater

Dean

It's a classic 50s-style jacket, but there's one bit of detailing might make this Baracuta G35 Dean Windcheater a love/hate thing.

The jacket is undeniably classic though, a jacket with a 1950s influence and heritage (think James Dean in 'Rebel Without A Cause'). It's made of cotton canvas, unlined and with a two-way zip, button cuffs and semi-elasticated waist.

But it's all slightly ruined by the use of the modern-era Baracuta logo, something that certainly wasn't around 'back in the day'. Shame about that, but if you can deal with it, £99 gets you one.

Poppy Print Circle Skirt from Dorothy Perkins

Poppyskirt

Much of the fifties looks available from reproduction brands and the high street of late have erred on the side of structural, vampish looks. If rockabilly style isn't for you, a more traditionally fifties look can be achieved with items like this Poppy Print Skirt from Dorothy Perkins.

The circle skirt style is given a softer edge with the use of a flowing cotton fabric, eschewing the heavily structured alternatives. The poppy print utilises the floral trend without falling for cliché, and adds impact with its colour palette too. Finished with a long hemline, this skirt is ideal for a more conservative and classic fifties inspired wardrobe.

It's available now from Dorothy Perkins for £30.

eBay watch: Original 1950s George Nelson sunburst wall clock by Howard Miller

Nelson_clock

A real gem has landed on eBay, this original 1950s George Nelson wall clock by Howard Miller. But there is one small problem with it.

However, yes, an original, not a reproduction. It's down as model 2022, a sunburst-style clock with 12 tapered rosewood rays, plus a drum-shaped metal dial with screw-on back plate. The entire thing has an overall diameter of 18.5 inches.

Condition is described as 'excellent', although the hands and mechanism 'appear to have been replaced' and don't seem to work. A clock expert should be able to sort it out. Anyway, right now it's just 99p – so one to keep an eye on.

Printed Floral Dress from George at Asda

Asdafloral

Floral prints have become a perennial choice of retro print, providing a source of inspiration for a variety of twentieth century eras. This Printed Floral Dress from George at Asda uses a sixties interpretation to provide a simple and stylish Spring dress.

The dress structure has an instantly early sixties feel, thanks to the modernised fifties elements like a more structural circle skirt, capped sleeves and a high waistline. The colour palette provides a contrast to the extreme femininity of floral print, avoiding obvious pinks and reds.

Get it from Asda now for a surprisingly thrifty £18.
