Monsoon Etta vintage style top

Etta

This top is something of a rare gem from Monsoon, finding black separates that don’t look like dowdy workwear can be challenging at times, but this Etta top certainly comes through in the style stakes.

We can only presume that the name is a nod to Ms. James herself, as the top has a great deal of sassy fifties styling going on. In 100% silk satin, it will look every bit as good as an original fit for a starlet. Thanks to the sheer sleeves and battenburg neckline, it’s far from frump too.

It’s available from Monsoon for £55.

Stop Staring! has been mentioned on this site a few times, becoming famed for the brand’s excellent forties tailoring and statement dresses. While many of their best have some of the typical conservatism of the decade’s style, this Vogue Rosalyn dress makes it a little more glam.

French & English Confectioner’s Handmade Shoes

Picture_2

French and English Confectioner’s is a couture shoe shop that takes all its design inspiration from eras in popular culture. While that may sound a little contrived, upon sight you can see that shoes are much more than just functional and pretty.

Each retro pair is handmade in a limited run of up to just 20 pairs, meaning you’ll be almost guaranteed never to step out in the same pair as anyone else in a room. Each pair is made in a secret London workshop too, adding a quirky mystique to shoes that will never appear ordinary.

1970s Designer, Bill Gibb comes to the Fashion Museum

Billgibb

From October, the Fashion Museum in Bath will display the work of a 1970s designer who has become one of the period’s forgotten stars. “Bill Gibb: A Personal Journey” is curated by Iain R Webb, author of a forthcoming book on the designer, and it brings together around 25 ensembles that showcase the designer’s genius.

The exhibition will include the outfit pictured above, a leather paneled skirt printed with silver chrysanthemum flowers worn with a matching jacket, which was first showcased at Gibb’s first solo collection at the Oriental Club in London in 1972. This piece is typical of the designer’s love of romance, fantasy and flair for dramatic effect. It is hoped that the exhibition will give Gibb’s work the recognition it deserves.

The display opens on 17 October 2008 and will continue until 4 October 2009. Visit the Fashion Museum website for more details.
